Oh dear! I didn't know that math was required for this site! I can handle language and music, but MATH??? Houston, we have a problem!

642 Ladies

Ladies, I would like to hear from you concerning your opinion of and experience with the S & W 642 hammerless. I've only taken it to the range once so far. Both my boyfriend and I found it "bruising" to the crotch of our hands. I found it difficult to pull, especially compared to his single action 38.

What do you thinK?

Staunch Reality

I think some of you guys are a round short of a six shooter if you know what I mean.

Speaking of six shooters. It's Friday night and so far, one Sam Adams, One Sierra Nevada PA, and now a Flying Dog Classic PA. Ahhhh. Things are getting better by the round.

I have to deal with heavy duty reality on a daily basis. Sorry I just got off on a tangent.....:scrutiny:

Tangent to a general curve. A "formal" definition of the tangent requires calculus. OOps, sorry.

Now known worldwide in the professional mathematical literature as the A5JMN postulate. (Pronounced "A 5 jammin' ")
:)

S.O.D. I would rather have the new 642-2 but, that's just me. I'm not convinced the lock is a deal breaker, it can always be disabled. I have two snubs with locks, I dislike the looks of them more than their functional aspect. If I had kids around it would be a plus. I just think the no lock is priced to high. $300 maybe at the most. Does it have papers and box?

Phydeaux, where did you come by the signed copy book?
Nice pics and nice shoes on the ebony and ivory twins.

I was perusing the interweb one evening and decided to stop by Ebay, something that I don't do much these days, and lo and behold this signed copy of the book was listed. I bid on it but was outbid. The reserve wasn't met by auctions end, but the next day I had a second chance offer that I actually missed. I emailed the guy and asked him if the offer was still good and he said that it was and that he would list it again with a "buy it now" for the same price he had offered it to me. Well, I just couldn't pass it up.

Harvster - Thats why we carry fiVe shooters!

S.O.D. - Unless it is NIB I agree it is too much, Some folks will pay more for a pre-lock, and I would not mind having one, but it is not much of an issue now for me. My lock does not function anymore, I cleaned it. As for the pressure rating look at the model number on the frame under the crane arm. Open the cylinder, you will see it. A X42 with no - is not rated +P. A X42-1 or X42-2 is rated +P. All X42-2's should have .38 S&W SPCL+P on the left side of the barrrel, Most X42-1's will as well, but some of the early ones do not. For a good primer on checking out revolvers read the sticky posted at the top of the page on the revolver forum index:

Hogue Project

So jt1, how goes the HMG Project? How many signatures to date?

Well, I just couldn't pass it up.
That's a great find. A treasure for certain. Good story too. It almost got away twice.

Thats why we carry fiVe shooters!
Here, here, I'll drink to that. Cracks another SNPA.

Cracks another SNPA.

Me? Only the finest: PBR.

But only in moderation. :scrutiny:

Everything in moderation,
including ... moderation.

There are some exceptionally fine posts in the club house tonight.

But, even though it's Friday night,
we can't let the guard down.
Stay safe out there.

Oh dear! I didn't know that math was required for this site!
Ardi, no worries: we keep the math real simple here
(and make up what we don't know ... :uhoh: ...)

Now, what's all this talk of tangents & calculus?

delta x/delta t?

or maybe just dx/dt?

Why, that relates to the acceleration thing with 135s and 158s.
Oh, no, wait, acceleration is d^2X/d^2t.
dx/dt is velocity.
________

OK, back to work.
But only for another hour ...

Oh dear! I didn't know that math was required for this site!...
Ardi - It's ok...you just need to be able to count to...(wait for it)...fiVe...:D, Seriously, don't let our rather unusual humor influence your first impression of this group. The membership here is the best you will find anywhere, and it appears you will fit in quite well...

DA - The petition goes well, as posted lssable97 is number 124 (thanks to all who have signed) and I think we will get a few more. I was originally thinking we would have a larger response but on reflection I guess this is a fairly good number for the limited exposure we have. Guess we will submit to Hogue when we get a few more?

But, even though it's Friday night,we can't let the guard down.Stay safe out there.
Yes, I'll second this...situational awareness, active defense, check your six...

...don't let our rather unusual humor influence your first impression of this group.
Unusual humor?!

Hey, I resemble that remark!

:D

OK, it's 1:15.
I'm done for the day.

Bed time.

Thanks for the info DAdams & jt1. I guess I knew that $399 was too much, but I am getting sick of waiting to get up to Memphis to buy the new one. I feel like a kid waiting on Christmas.

On the other hand my CW permit probably won't be here for another two months. They hold it for 120 days in MS. I guess I can wait two weeks and still have plenty of range time before my permit gets here.

S.O.D. -
There is a local pawn shop with a used no-lock 442 for $399.

I picked up my 642-1 (no lock) NIB for $400 out the door. It's sitting here in my pocket as I type.

I much prefer the no-lock versions and am looking for a 442-1 at present.

Good luck with your search.

Math???...I must be dreaming;)

Yes, I think if we are 642's, we are a round short of a six shooter. Or was that an attemp at a pun and I missed it?

See what I mean? Velocity, acceleration, tangents, calculus!!!! Though I will admit to the occasional tangent. I'd like to stick with jt1's "It's ok...you just need to be able to count to...(wait for it)...fiVe" That sure works for me!

Ardi,

You're at home here. :)

Some of us are just math nerds and like to banter a bit on occasion in math-speak. Just ignore us.

Speaking of banter among cyber-friends, let me clarify something from last night:

FiVe, I mean, your majesty,
may I suggest that our sergeant at arms
may need to be temporarily relieved of his duties
because he's had one too many micro-brews ...

{... and didn't share a **** one of them with the rest of us!} :
Just for the record, even though I'm sure our friend DA knows it, that was just that: good natured banter on a Friday night.

I have no doubt that if I was hanging out at DA's house, we'd be discussing 642s and other ... um, calibers of air weight revolvers  over good brew.

OK, back to work. It never ends for me these days ... relief is in sight though (and not a day too soon ... :scrutiny: )

Oh, no, wait, acceleration is d^2X/d^2t.
Speaking of acceleration,
has any body noticed :scrutiny:
how fast #5001 is approaching?

fiVe, sharpen the pencil, bro.
You've got a speech coming up ...
____________

OK, as I see it,
we're going to need
major fireworks for 5001.

smiley-flamethrower-2.gif

And a band.

A world-class band.

Hmm. I'm wondering:
if a 642 owner was to choose
a world-class band to play for 5001,
who would it be?

Band Pick

Hey Nema - how about Guns & Roses, or even better, 38 Special.

Yes, even the SAA gets a night off now and then. Should such an event have arisen that required a clear head and judgement I would have defered to the "Mod on Duty". Or, one of many of our merry band. ;) I hope I did not pose a bad example to the impressionable amongst us. I will refrain from such references in the future. I wondered where the lampshade went.

It appears that every page has 24 posts, regardless of length. According to my math (one...fiVe) that will put # 5000 as the #4 post on page 201 :(, maybe I am wrong.

New to Forum

I found this forum today and I'm pretty excited to learn from other's experience with a S&W 642. I'd like to introduce myself and give a little history.

I have only had my CCW permit for 6 months and so I'm a little new at it. In the past couple of months I have done a lot of research and shot many carry guns before I decided on the 642. I narrowed my decision to a revolver vs. a pistol mostly due to simplicity and reduced chance of misfires and accidental firings. I tried a few Glock models before deciding. I may be wrong but I needed to go with something I felt comfortable with in my pocket. The hammerless design helped my peace-of-mind level also. Next I wanted something small yet powerful to take control over a bad situation if needed. I tried the S&W 340 with .38, 38 +p, and .357 rounds. The .357 rounds felt like I just caught a line drive with my bare hands. I knew I would never shoot those in real life. I did like the lightness in my pocket though. I then researched bullet ballistics for expansion, protection from over penetration, and some legal concerns and came up with 2 choices - Federal's PD38HS3H in the .38 special or P38HS1 if I wanted the +P version. I then tried the S&W 640 and found that it served my needs and didn't seem that much heavier when carrying. I also thought that the extra few ounces of weight made for a little less abuse on the recoil. Although it wasn't a "fun" gun to shoot it was manageable as a conceal gun for me and so it was purchased. I've been happy ever since. I've added a Crismon Trace 405 laser grip and typically carry it with BlackHawk CQC SERPA level 2 holster. I've fired about 150 practice rounds through it and I'm pleased with the accuracy.

I'm sure I'll have many questions from all of you and the next time my thread won't be so long. Sorry about that. Thanks.
