Whether cartridge or muzzle loader, the single shot weapon is the antithesis of the currently popular autoloading rifle. While proponents of the autoloaders are buying larger and larger magazines and practicing changing them, those of us who like single shots are learning how to make that one round count.

If you are like me and only have guns to empty cases so you can reload them again, then single shots are great for trying new cartridges/loads. I have an unhealthy desire for a 35 Whelen and 45-70 just to try them and a single shot is the way to go for me. A single shot 30-30 would provide a lot of entertainment as well.

Different tools for different jobs. Training with AR's and doing quick mag changes is usually in the context of gunfighting. Generally, folks aren't doing that with a single shot. Where there is overlap (hunting), there is little difference in mindset or operation. When it comes to big game, you typically are only going to get one shot. One good one anyway. Nobody approaches hunting with the idea that they can rely on quick successive shots to bring home the bacon. If so, they'll go hungry.

I like both, but here are my singles-

Ok, not technically a "rifle" but I have a number of rifled inserts for it, lol.

Also a smoothbore, but converted from a rifle and originally issued with solid slug cartridges as well as shot. 😊

Nothing wrong with enjoying the older technology.

I keep my AR and semi auto skills as sharp as I can but I have been buying and enjoying old revolvers lately

Ask an archer how much they enjoy it.

Or an atlatl user... Or a stone slinger

And again, as in a recently closed thread, I state it is possible to learn how to make one round count from an autoloading rifle. Your title for this thread amounts to clickbait. Anti-AR/AK? No. Antithesis? Mechanically, yes, but otherwise, just another choice in a plethora of firearm types in this Golden Age of Firearms.
Count me as one of those proponents of autoloaders who have long since learned how to make that (one, or first, either way) round count. I own and enjoy shooting ARs, an AK, several single shot muzzleloaders, and one single shot cartridge rifle.
Your username seems to fit; your recent posts seem contrived to only stir the pot and and create division.

Well said.

+1

I'm betting he also walks up hill both ways to get to the range...

If you say so.

I like both 'platforms' -- along with leverguns, pumps, bolt action repeaters, airguns, crossbows.

Here's a few of my favorite non-repeaters (BTW, the Mauser G98 is an interwar Wehrmann single shot conversion):

No disrespect to your thesis, but you can shoot any firearm as a single shot. I do this quite a bit.

I love them both. My two favorite rifle actions are AR’s and single shots. I have 13 single shot rifles, pistols, and shotguns, and a whole bunch of AR’s too. Never done a mag dump in my life.

Love the Rascal. Gave them to my Grandkids and need another one (or 3) for myself. Ridiculously cute, fun, and surprisingly accurate.

They also weigh almost nothing. With a few easy mods, could become an excellent survival/camping/hiking gun.

Love the Huskys! I just missed the last good batch at Simpson's. What they have left is pretty rough. 😭

What's the 3rd one down with the double set triggers?

They'll find more. For a change I found both of my Husqvarna sporters locally instead of at Simpsons!

TCR 83 Aristocrat with a .223 barrel. I'm still trying to locate another barrel in .22 Hornet -- I got outbid on one at eBay last month.

In my mind there is a lot of similarity. A big reason I like both is because they are both very compact. My 22” single shots are about the same overall length as a 16” AR and have similar weight and balance. Having the metal receiver with 2 piece stock is also kinda similar and just like you can swap barrel to change calibers with a single shot, you swap uppers on an AR to change calibers.

I’m looking forward to my girls to outgrow it so I can claim it as my own. I’m not even going to take the pink stock off.

Nice! Thats a new one on me. Old? Imported?

I'm still having trouble thinking of the 1980s as old, but yeah I guess so.

The TCR was made in Rochester, and their factory was destroyed by fire in 1997. The company decided not to resume manufacture of the TCR after that, so the production run for this rifle was roughly 15 years. Not sure when mine was built -- I bought it used via Gunbroker.

As a kid that seldom saw any money to buy ammo I learned a long, long, time ago to make every shot count. Although I like every type of action to some extent and really like single shot rifles I still practice that. Ammo dumps do nothing to thrill me. I am an old, boring, geezer to the younger crowd I suppose but that bothers me not one bit.

My range draws shooters of all ages. Seldom do I hear a mag dump happen with either handgun or rifle.

Few years ago I helped butcher two deer taken by hunters using ARs. One shot each, shoulder/spine hit. Contrary to President Biden's claim that ARs tear game up so badly there's no edible meat left, the damage from the AR was less than I expect to see from a .30-30 rifle or 12ga slug. Again they were one shot kills by hunters using ARs. In these woods your first shot counts because if you miss the game disappears.

I have .30 Carbine, 7.62 AK and 5.56 AR I shoot regularly in military rifle matches (currently 20 shots in 20 minutes per target). I have standard issue magazines for all three. A lot of the times I spend in the mountain or on the range, my singleshots and muzzle loaders make for leisurely shooting fun.

Variety adds spice.
