The anti-AR/AK - single shot rifles

My only bona fide single shots are my BPCR Winchester and Miroku/Browning.
BUT…
I have an AR throated for a 90 gr spitzer way over magazine length and loaded with a Sled for F class.
My Remington 1100TA gets one at a time for Trap, I use an O/U for doubles.
Self ejecting, self cocking single shots in use.

When I was a kid, a magazine fed bolt action was often called a single shot. I did not know anybody who learned to cycle the bolt at the shoulder.

I'm a single shot guy too.
I even have a factory single shot 870 Remington....

Among others.
Here's my newest..

I like to dabble in different Calibers. The simplicity and economy of the single shot Handi-Rifle has allowed me to have my fun.
The rifle above is in 45-70. I took a deer with it on opening day. I have the same rifle in .204, .223(2), .7mm-08, .30-06, and also 12ga rifled slug(2), 12ga full.
I too am looking for a. 35Whelen, and a nice 20ga.

As a kid that seldom saw any money to buy ammo I learned a long, long, time ago to make every shot count. Although I like every type of action to some extent and really like single shot rifles I still practice that. Ammo dumps do nothing to thrill me. I am an old, boring, geezer to the younger crowd I suppose but that bothers me not one bit.

My range draws shooters of all ages. Seldom do I hear a mag dump happen with either handgun or rifle.

Ive known quite a few older guys that have a deep sentiment against “wasting ammo” because they were taught as kids that any bullet that didn’t put something on the table was a waste. My wife’s uncle refused to sight in his deer rifle because it was waste of perfectly good bullets. He would watch us plinking for fun and nearly have an allergic reaction. Definitely is a generational gap in mindset.

More single shot nonsense.
A person can either shoot, or not.
Platform shouldn't matter.

And stuff happens.

Who here is so awesome they go afield with just a single round?

Left home with a dozen....returned with 11 and a deer, but everyone has done that.
I probably shot an honest 5k rds through a 4E Ithaca back when I shot competitive trapshooting. Probably close to that many more through a couple different o/u's shooting doubles and sporting clays. Shooting a break action is a lesson in simplicity. (Plus, imagine how cool you look blowing a puff of smoke out of the barrel after you catch that ejected hull in your hand .....eh @entropy ?

I love single shot rifles and if I had to sell everything and keep the one I love most, I might well end up with the .54 flintlock muzzleloader.

That said I did a mag dump with a friend’s FAL yesterday and it was pretty sweet. May need to add one of those to the arsenal.

A man after my own heart. My dearest is a 444 that I also have a 35 Remington and a 45 cal smokeless muzzleloader barrels fitted to the same frame. I also have a 223, a 12/20 gauge, and I recently got another with 223 and 20 gauge barrels. I just sent the 223 barrel from that one out to get rebored to 38 special. When I was a kid my brother won a .410 for shooting trap and I used to play with it for hours ejecting empty shells. Had a love for them ever since.

I wouldn't know. Not something I do.

BTW, never really liked break open rifles.
If going single shot my choice is a falling block.

Another here that never warmed to break action rifles.

And I recently picked this one up.

The weapons involved in Custer's end had nothing to do with the results. Poor judgement, poor communication, and overconfidence caused Custer's and the loss of the rest of his command .
I’d say the design of the rifles had nothing to do with the results…. But maybe the early cartridges did. (Copper, jamming, etc.) I think if they functioned like they were supposed to, things probably would have gone better.

Custer himself had a .50-70 Rolling block, apparently.

If you are like me and only have guns to empty cases so you can reload them again, then single shots are great for trying new cartridges/loads. I have an unhealthy desire for a 35 Whelen and 45-70 just to try them and a single shot is the way to go for me. A single shot 30-30 would provide a lot of entertainment as well.
There is a 30-30 and a 45-70 barrel for the T/C Contender. Never have found one, though.

I like both, but here are my singles-

Ok, not technically a "rifle" but I have a number of rifled inserts for it, lol.

Also a smoothbore, but converted from a rifle and originally issued with solid slug cartridges as well as shot. 😊
That BSA is a thing of beauty.

I've always had a thing for the TCR but never got one. Hell, it took me until just a couple years ago to finally get a Contender.

Three Contenders, a Henry, a CVA, and a NEF Handi 45-70. Plus a bunch of caplocks and a couple flinters.
Pretty laid back lately.

Like the Ruger falling block. Don't see much difference in follow up shot speed between it and a bolt gun and its a lot tighter package to lug and shoot even with a 24" barrel. Don't think I've used more that two follow up shots in the 40yrs I've used it though for deer hunting.

With the cost of ammo today and the way things are, I can understand why people have big count mags but can't understand why they shoot them. Almost every time I've seen someone use one at the range they are just wasting ammo and don't appear to care if they hit the target or not.

The last place we should find a ‘Karen’ is in the gun community…

Yet, here we are.

😂

I saw a 14” 30-30 for sale at Cabelas a few months ago. I nearly bought it but it was kinda high. Maybe not but more than I had
