You used to be able to store your firearms in a fancy display cabinet and not worry too much. I came across this old picture of mine and wish I could still use that cabinet. I since bought a safe and keep them all hidden. Oh, well.

Yessir, I'm afraid those days are gone forever. If the thieves didn't get you, the blissninnies would....for "endangering the children", you know.

very nice cabinet you have there, very nice. I too miss viewing my families firearms in that way ( before I started my own collection) They were always so interesting.

BTW what is the rifle on the left, standing up?

I'd be happy with Burt Gummer's wall o' guns.

But ya, my grandfather still keeps a Kentucky rifle and a Sharps and a Colt 1851 (?) on display in his house.

I think the only way you can have your beautiful collection on display any more is if you have a walk in vault. Other wise everything is locked up in the safe.

Very nice display.

I still have one in the dining room with several longguns. These are my "throwdowns" to divert the attention of these from the expensive ones in the safes.

I've always wanted a display cabinet like that that would be safe; unfortunately, it would have to be a wood veneer with safe-like quality underneath, and shatterproof glass :(

ez45, you just have to get out of Campbell, CA.

There are still places where there are loaded rifles leaning on the wall by the door, to say nothing of in a display case...

Why cant you use that display? Dont you just need to have trigger locks on them?
Sorry Im not familiar with your laws as far as firearm storage goes. How about HD firearms? Their stored loaded, unlocked and ready to go are they not?

lol, trigger locks wont stop a thief from taking them. I use to have 2 glass front gun cases like that. mine were not as wide but all in all the same. They use to make my living room look so nice. I still have them in storage. sux I cant use them any more. I live about 28 miles east of Down town Dallas, TX. use to be a town with 350 people. now its 13,000.

Obviously, but are there laws in Cali about not being able to openly display firearms? Our laws here are pretty strict as far as storing but they can be left in the open for display as long as they are trigger locked, bolt removed etc. I thought the issue was having them openly visible?

I keep mine on display -- on a big wall rack, not even lockable. Now, when the wife and I go on a trip, I move them all to the safe, but otherwise, I let 'em breathe.

Good old days = gun collection on display
Today (with media spin) = Hidden weapons cache

Very true. It's hard to find a decent wood/glass gun cabinet anymore. 5 years ago when I got mine I had to go to 4 different furniture stores before they knew what I was talking about.

By the way. Wood will protect steel better from humidity better than steel will. I still use wood tool boxes. One way to keep tools rust free in a steel toolbox....put a piece of wood in it. The wood will absorb excess humidity when it's humid, and dry out when it can. Same thing with the walls of a wood gun cabinet. Not so good in fire or theft though.

That looks like a wolverine pelt. Is it? If it is, I don't see those much. Nice.

First of all, there are safe storage laws in California.

HOWEVER, these laws in California only cover guns that "can be concealed upon the person", or handguns, or loaded firearms in general.

Second, they only have any effect IF the gun is misused by a minor who didn't gain access via illegal entry, and this causes death or injury.

Third, it doesn't apply if you are present and have the gun in your possession or in a place where you can readily retrieve it.

See 12035 and 12036: http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/12020.php

So, you can leave unloaded long guns wherever you want. You can keep loaded handguns in a locked home whenever, if there are no children in the house, and no children would legally have access to the house if you're not home. You can keep loaded handguns around the house, if you are home, with children there. They don't have to be secured.

Furthermore, as long as nobody actually gets the gun and uses it, you can't be prosecuted for anything.

Bottom line? While I don't like government micromanagement of my life, I don't think the law dictates anything that I wouldn't do anyway. I have no desire to come home to a burglar facing me with my own gun in his hand. I have no desire for any child to get hurt because I was too cheap or lazy to have a pistol safe.

The gun cabinet in the picture would be perfectly legal in Campbell, California, at any time, in any place.

The difference is cultural, not legal.

Exactly. How many kids 50 years ago grew up around a farm shooting stuff. How many today. A LOT of kids today relish inner city living......"the anti-gun".

my great uncle tom had a gun cabnet in the basement, actually it was a wood closet attached to the wall, it was never locked and the guns were always loaded, the kitchen was downstairs, as well as the radio, chair, and heater that he sat in, listened to, and got warmed up by. the basement door was NEVER locked, they all slept upstairs, and he let local kids come in and get a drink from the basement sink if they were walking home from work/school, any time day or night, weather anyone was home or not, i sorely miss those days...

I grew up on a ranch, with a loaded .30-30 behind the kitchen door. You just automatically picked it up when you went out, and stuck it in the saddle boot.

The way I see it, ir's my house, my guns, and anyone who doesn't like how I store or display them can take a flying leap at a flatulent frog.

.

Very very nice pic. What caliber is the Winchester lever? Looks like maybe
a .44 mag ?
