The new .17 Mach 2!!!!!!

Yea....another overpriced cartridge that can perform in a narrow range of shooting needs in a way already met by at least three other cartridges which cost less and have proven track records....

...be still my beating heart.

The .22lr is the "everyman" cartridge. Always has been, always will be.

And I'll bet you'll never hear about someone taking deer or moose w/ a .17 Hummer either... :p

Tell me of another cartridge that has the potential to shoot this flat without much noise or recoil and may cost as much as .22lr's someday? :D

I just don't buy the bit about copper jackets making ammo much more expensive. Look at .223.

When they have value packs at Walmart what are you gonna say then??? :D

The biggest problem I see for this round is with tube fed guns like the Marlin Model 60. Or the Winchester one and all the rest of them out there.

Not a great round...splits the performance value of the .17 HMR with the .22 Mag.

It also should more than split the cost between the .22lr and the .22WMR, which will make it a great round. :D

I have a vision. I vision of the future.....in which hicks like myself are shooting up prairie dog towns with scoped, carbon fiber barreled Ruger 10/17's with 50 round mags of .17 mach 2's that were bought at Walmart for $15.00 a 500 round brick. :D :D :D

Yes!!! Hehehe.

First what I heard at the gun shop today. Owner said the new Mach2 will be about $5 a box of 50. He thinks they are going to sell like hot cakes.

Now my two cents. I can get Winchester Powerpoint for $14.50 a brick, that is $1.45 for 50. Anything within about 75 yards with that ammo and my 10/22 is going to die. 50 yards or less for sure. For everything beyond that, I like using my .223. The only reason I like my .223 is it is a lot less money than when I was shooting 110 gr. V-max out of my .308. However, the 110 gr. V-max still rules in "flying squirrel" power. Anyways, the .17 Mach2 is just a gimick in my view. If you want to kill varmints in close, .22LR is the cheapest way to go. If you want to reach out and touch them, I would recommend you get a .223. It kills coyotes too.

However, to each their own. If someone wants to spend the money on it, have fun. I just personally won't be spending my money on a .17 caliber bullet that probably won't kill squirrels any deader than my .22LR. If I want to really hit em hard and far, that is what .223 and .308 are for.

We do need to recognize Hornady for this gold mine. They did a great job making money on the entire .17 caliber concept.

I don't see why everyone here complains about .17hmr being expensive, in europe we pay $24 a box 50.

.22LR - cheapest your going to get is $3.75

OUCH!

Is that $24 or 24 euros???

El Rojo:

Like I mentioned before it has ALOT better reach and flatter trajectory than .22lr value packs. No recoil and alot less noise. The potential to be almost as cheap as .22lr and certainly should be cheaper than .223 over time. If you varminted prairie dogs you would better understand why .17 mach 2 is a good thing.

Potential and should be. Aren't prarie dogs a bit bigger than ground squirrels? What does a .17 do to a prarie dog? Will it be as decisive as a .223 if you want to reach out and touch one? For distance, use a bigger gun and watch em go down hard. In short? Hard to beat $1.45 for a 40 gr Power Point that knocks em down good. And we all know value packs aren't the best for shooting varmints, hence my mentioning Winchester Power Points.

But hey, whatever you want to spend your money on.

Actually this is a good question. How does that .17 caliber 17 grain bullet perform on varmints. Sure it shoots flat and fast, but does it do the job? I don't know. I don't have one.
