Here she is. A brand new unfired as best we can tell model 624 smith and Wesson N frame. Bought from one of my best pals and he scored a rare houge king wood grip for it and I’m absolutely in love with it. I think this gun is going to kick off my reloading ambitions. Hit all the local stores for some ammo and found one box of magtech cowboy. Ordering some food for it here soon.

Very nice! Congratulations on finding a superb S&W N frame .44 Special to bring home.

Mine is a 6.5”. I wanted a 4” model but they are few and far between at prices I could stomach. This one was as clean as any used gun I have bought, I doubt many bullets went down the pipe before I bought it.

I load a few different .44 Spl loads without hot rodding the cartridge. My max is the Skeeter load of a 240 gr swc over 7.5 gr Unique, but I reserve those for my Blackhawk. For the S&W I keep stuff a bit more sedate.

The only negatives about these beautiful older guns is a dearth of factory support. Mine had to go back for an issue and S&W did a minor fix and returned it with a note stating they no longer have parts for these guns. 😞

Good luck finding ammo, let us know how it shoots for you when you get a chance. :D

Stay safe.

Typically speaking how long does straight wall pistol brass last? Does the crimp shorted the brass over time? 7-8 reloads per casing?

What a great find. If you can't find Special ammo for it try .44 Russian. I downloaded it for my Model 29 and it works great. Very little recoil but it's very accurate.

One of many regreats I have in my gun buying and selling career is that somehow or the other I let THREE Model 24-3's, and one Model 624 get away from me. Oh...and all had 4" barrels. (insert beat head on wall emojie here)

Today, a 4" Model 29-10 fills the gap. I never shoot anything but 44 Specials using 44 Special brass, but it's just not the same.

Enjoy yours. And hold onto it. It's a nice one.

If you taper crimp, or use a light roll crimp like this one, brass cases shooting mild to moderate loads should last at least 10 reloadings.

Off the top of my head, I can’t recall a .44 Spl case failing for me due to a split case/case mouth, nickel .38’s are far more prone to split. I will honestly say that I am far more likely to inadvertently crunch one against a die or drop one at the range and lose it.

Even with nickel case tendencies, I have .38 Spl nickel plated cases that are nearly brass-colored because they’ve been loaded-fired-tumbled so many times. 500 new .44 Spl cases from Starline should last you many, many years.

Stay safe.

I like it! 500 starlines for the win. I’ll have 250 to start with here soon. I need to start putting together reloading equipment. Cheaply as I can
Lee hand press loader is a good start, especially if you’re not cranking out hundreds of rounds. I still have one set up for a “boutique” round as I don’t shoot it much, but the cost to savings over commercial is ridiculous.

So it looks like if you get a new one it does not have the bushing lock pin anymore. They changed the design. Folks don’t like it. I gotta find an old one. I’m on the hunt..
