The top 5 .45's for allowing double-taps

I', gpnna get my first 45 soon (and readily admit I don't have alot of firearm experience fompared to many here).

I understand that the first shot isn't completely likely to put the BG down, and so I'm wondering about 45's with a design that'll shoot soft enough to allow for that crucial follow-up shot (depending on teh situation...two may be all you get).

I said top 5 because I don;t want this to be a contest about everyone's individual favorite.

Also, I'd appreciate guns that would also make a good carry weapon.

Pick 5 all steel fullsize 1911s either/or Monolith, and there you go.

Any ol' milspec (Yes, that's critical, IMHO: milspec, or as close as you can get to it) 1911 will do the trick just fine. 45 isn't a particularly difficult recoil round and big steel guns eat up what there is.

Stay away from 4" or shorter slides and you'll be just fine.

But doesn't a fullsize present more problems in terms of carry?

I'm looking for a 45 that's as uiversal as possible in that regard

Anything with a short trigger reset and controllable recoil can do a double tap.

And honestly, the difference for carry between a 5" barrel and a 4" barrel is almost nil. The biggest issue most people have with carrying a full sized Gov't 1911 is the weight, not the size.

For the optimal "double tapping" carry gun I'd have to go with a Les Baer Monolith that had been bobbed ala Dan Wesson with a Springfield V ported barrel and slide. Oh and that TRP checkering on the frontstrap, that stuff is so spiky you get a good grip on the pistol and you get your iron for the day.

Doesn't a ported barrel present problems such as a truckload of muzzle-flash? (just going by what I've heard...not sure how accurate that is)

Also, are there quality aftermarket springs I can install that will help without hurting the overall performance of the firearm in some other way?

I have found that I double-tap faster and closer with my M&P45 than with my 1911s. The recoil is sweeter, and there is less mass to put back on target.

Why do you need a double-tap? One shot from a 45 will instantly kill a person and knock them 15 feet back.

The aforementioned 1911 would be good. If you are overly concerned about size, go for a Commander-sized 1911. It's about perfect for carrying. Another option not named thus far is the H&K USP. It allows for cocked and locked carry so your first shot would be single action in that mode. It is however blockier in size and thicker in width than the 1911.

Everybody's answer will be different.

There are two main things to consider, both of which are subjective. First and most importantly, find a pistol that fits your hands well. An ill-fitting gun will never be as controllable as one that fits you. Secondly, make your choice with a bit of weight to dampen the recoil impulse. The more recol the gun soaks up, the less your hands and arms have to. Doesn't need to be very heavy, the .45acp isn't the beast a lot of people seem to believe. I have successfully given a five year old a crash course in shooting a fullsize 1911 and he handled it alright. Not magically wonderful, but manageable.
