<Sigh> The mind boggles at such profundity...ya but 9mm can bounce around inside the person as where th .40 will just go through them making a bigger mess for you to clean up

i know a lot of this is not coming directly from me, but ts from a friend who owns half a dozen handguns and has been shooting handguns since he got his first one at 19
Avoid the 9mm 147gr loads as they were developed primarily as accurate 9mm Submachine rounds only and also avoid the 115gr Winchester Silvertip hollow points as they got 2 FBI agents killed and several wounded many years back due to poor bullet performance...
performance is measured in OSS (One Shot Stops) and penetration and expansion..
.357sig is an atrocious home defense caliber... it will punch thru a car door better than most calibers yes, and it will also go thru walls and travel farther than most other calibers also
The reason so many police depts and the military use 9mm is because they are CHEAP.
Why?
Because body armor stops 9mm hollowpoints cold. Most cops dont shoot to kill anyways, which is what hollowpoints are designed to do, kill in a most grotesque and damaging way. FMJ will punch an easily-sealed hole. Unless it hits something vital, it probably wont kill them, whereas hollowpoints will do their job and liquify your internals from a winging.
Umm, you do know how hollowpoints work, right? The object is to turn your targets internals into fine mush. Even a non-direct, normally non-lethal hit can kill from that stuff flying around inside you. One bullet turns into 50.
Because 9mm has been repeatedly proven inferior in battlefield situations. It's low velocity, will not penetrate military-grade body armor for ????, they are very delicate, jamming frequently and requiring constant maintenance.
Police and military-grade soft armor will not "stop" a 40 or 45. It only slows the velocity down enough to reduce damage and initial physical shock. The ceramic plates needed to stop a round cold are extremely heavy, enough that they are impractical for day-to day use. The only people who use those are the well equipped and trained tactical squads who only need to wear it for a few hours at a time.
I havent shot many hand guns. The one I liked the best was a colt 6 shooter used by the outlaw matt warner. It was passed down thru my family and my grandpa has it now. You pull the trigger and it takes about a second to fire because the bullets are soo old.
Yeah you can buy automatic weapons. After an extremely extensive background check (quite possibly the most extensive check you can go through) and paying an enormous sum of money, you can get a permit for an automatic weapon "for display only". They remove the full auto mechanism and plug it. You can buy kits to unplug it and replace the auto mechanisms. So it is possible, but it is a major pain in the ass.
