I've run into some dumb people, but now I've found a new low. I went to my local gun shop this afternoon, basically just to look around and grab some ammo if prices were good. As I'm leaving the store, I go around the corner to the parking lot, and immediately notice a kinda scruffy looking guy leaning against the side of the building. He's just an average looking mid 20s guy, but something about him just gets my hackles up. I instantly found a reason to transfer my right hand nearer to my hip as I walk towards him. He looks up, sees me, and, "Hey bro, can you do me a big favor?" I keep walking, and give my head a little shake. He steps out in front of me, not blocking my way, but kind of in my path. "Just a little favor, you'll make a little money for your time, it's nothing bad." Another person is walking up from behind him, and they slow down as they notice our exchange.
The guy says, "Bro, all I need...sorry, it's kinda embarassing, but would buy some ammo for me?" I'm kinda shocked, I was expecting to get the usual cash request, or asked for a ride, or "help for getting home".
The other person has gone around us, and is going in the store. I'm still moving toward my car, keeping my eyes on the guy, and he says "C'mon bro, they won't sell to me for some reason, I dunno why, but it's nothing wrong that I've done."
He realizes that he's not going to get anything from me now, and he gives me a kind of wave as I get in my car. I start up, back up, and I see he's still leaning against the store, waiting for someone else to come out. I pull around to the front of the store, where he can't see where I went, and i go back inside.
The person who had been walking to the store is at the counter, talking with the manager. When he sees me, he points and says, "Ask him, he saw it too."
The manager asks me, "Did someone speak to you in the parking lot?" I reply, "Yes indeed" give the guy's basic decription, and tell him that the guy just looked WRONG.
The manager picks up the phone, calls the non-emergency phone number, and asks the dispatcher to send a unit over. About 20 minutes later, the police car rolls into the lot, the officer gets out, and goes around the building. 15 seconds later, scruffy guy comes rocketing around the corner, the officer in pursuit, trips going over a curb, and gets nicely low-tackled by the second officer. They took a statement from the manager and I, it turns out the guy had maybe a 1/3 of an ounce of marijuana on him, but the cop said he had it all in dozens of open foil-wraps for pills. He thought it was odd, they were so small that it would've taken several just for a thin joint, and packing them would have been a PAIN.
I'm still nervous from this, something about this guy just hit my "WRONG WRONG WRONG" button right away. I've been around lots of "bad" people, including a multiple murderer (released, time served, now a Scared Straight speaker, and one hell of a good Thermoquad tuner), but none of them ever got me to react this strongly.

I'd say you've got nothing to be nervous about. You did the right thing, trusting your gut. You got the police involved, which is usually the safest thing to do. Keep us posted if you hear anything new.

When I see someone like that on the street I simply ask them for a dollar as I make eye contact. It usually baffles them and they don't know what to say.

When someone on the street asks me for money I simply tell them no but I ask them if they could take a cheque! The looks I get are always good for a chuckle ...

When people like that try to engage me, I find it more convenient to adopt a fighting stance, use the "stop" hand signal, and say "NO, I am not interested." Give them a very hard look and start moving left or right.

It's very important that you move. They have a plan for you in that spot, so disrupt their plan.

Is it rude? Sure, but there are many women who have been raped out of politeness (paraphrase from _The Gift of Fear_) (insert other crime).

Many of you know that these days there are a fair number of people walking the street, mall or in church that have NO money (currency) on them. I have sold raffle tickets for our conservation club a couple times at a sporting goods/gun shop lobby and I have been told-"ill get you on the way out-I dont have any money" and I believe many of them. Some dont stop on the way out but many do.

Avenger, are you saying that something about the guy feels wrong because of the weird things with standing outside a gun store begging for a straw ammo purchase and the excessively small wraps of pot? Maybe he's just a stingy dealer who needed ammo. I don't think it's anything to be worried about. He probably won't be around there again for a while. Just keep an eye out for him after a month or so and live your life. People, by nature, are strange in their habits.

I hate getting accosted like that. From time to time, I'll be leaving a liquor store with a pack of smokes, and some guy will ask me for spare change. It's always uncomfortable, and I imagine more so when it's ammo and not change or smokes.

The worst part is that, whenever I get accosted like this, I can't help thinking, "Probably just a guy begging change... but maybe a distraction for another dude to come up behind me and..." It's hard to look everywhere, impossible to do so all at once. For what it's worth, I think bringing the cops in was the right call. Personally, I probably would have bugged out, but I respect that you did that. And, no, I wouldn't worry about any consequences of that.

"Psst. Hey buddy, can you spare some 9mm hollowpoints? I'm on my way to meet a dealer and just realized I left home without a backup magazine."

To be honest, I still don't really know why he made me so instantly nervous. Literally, as soon as I saw him, I hit that "Fight or Flight" mode, before he said a word or even moved.

One of the local TV shows did an "expose" on panhandlers a few years back, about 2/3 of them were legit, simply people down on their luck. The other third ranged from raging alkys to a "professional panhandler" who would get into a brand new SUV at the end of the day, he was pulling in several hundred dollars a day.

You got the police involved, which is usually the safest thing to do.

Nope, the manager did.

So the gun store would not sell the guy ammo? Is that true? Why not? Had the panhandler actually been in the store?

A 20 minute response on the non-emergency line is faster that some places will get you a priority one response.

Where was this at that they do a background check for ammo purchase?
here it is go to wallyworld, point it out to the kid behind the counter, no, next shelf down, no down and to the right, your other right, next one over , other way, yeah thats it give me two boxes of that. Hand them your money and leave.

Is there really such a thing as a straw ammo purchase? Seems odd because with no background check the only limiting factor is age, like with cigarettes or booze.

You know what to do? Give him a box of double-charged handloads. That oughta turn his Lorcin into a fairly effective grenade.

thats hilarious because its usally true. :D

Good thing you trusted your instincts. Who knows what he was up to, but like the above quote said, its a pretty simple in and out process to buy ammo. If he really didnt do anything wrong, whether or not the gun shop owner was judging on appearance, he simply could have gone to another store to buy ammo.

I don't know why the manager wouldn't sell to him, probably gave him the heebies too. I'm pretty sure there isn't anywhere else within 2 miles of the store that sells ammo, it isn't in a particularly good area of town.
I've seen them check ID for age before. And any store owner can refuse to sell anything for any reason he wants.

Maybe it was some inept journalist, like maybe "Harold O Riviera" trying to set up a straw ammo purchase for a Pulitzer Prize winning expose on the availability of dum-dums on the black market.

There are a grand total of two people that I will buy ammo for. My wife, and the guy who was my best man. Buying ammunition for random people is a really good way to get named as a co-defendant in a civil liability trial. Good call, don't buy ammo for drug dealers.

When guys ask me for some change, I tell them to do the electric slide for me. If they do it, I'll give them some change since it was worth the entertainment value alone. If they don't do it, they get nothing. Most times I get a funny look and get cussed at but I find that amusing as well so it really wasn't a waste of my time.
I just did this last Tuesday in Fort Lauderdale off of Broward Blvd at a BP. The kid was not amused at all...but I was.

That's cold Bro, someday you may find yourself outside a gun store with a sign reading "Will Work for Ammo"............

Avenger, you ABSOLUTELY did the right thing. Asking someone to purchase ammo for you because a legit GS won't sell to him!!! If that isn't a red flag I don't know what is.

Regarding the references to panhandlers, my daily commute here in Portland brings me face to face almost every day with people panhandling at the entrances and exits off of Hwy's 217 and 26. Particularly on Hwy 217 I have seen them perform "shift changes" as one group replaces the other.

The Oregonian Newspaper (the local socialist rag) actually did an interesting expose of the kind of money some of these people make. Some make as much as $ 2-300.00 a day! Most of the money goes to booze or meth.
