Okay...so they aren't really coming to take our guns...yet. But hypothetically speaking, let's assume that they were. Aside from the fact that a lot of folks immediate reaction might be to fight...let's play along for a minute.

You already have your long guns in an undisclosed location, along with whatever other supplies you deemed nescesary. Which handgun would you designate as your sidearm...and why?

Can't argue with that logic!!LOL!!.......and by the way...please don't gather from this thread that I am some wacko, or something...just bored.:)

Not a whacko

I don't think you're a whacko. I think of this fairly often. I know a few people who try to buy person-to-person whenever possible to keep the guns off-paper. Legal, but under the radar. I've considered that too, but logistically that is hard unless you go to a lot of gun shows.

I've considered buying extra guns and hiding them somewhere, but I dunno where.

I will say that my second gun purchase was a 9mm para for the express reason that I reckon 9mm will be one of the most common rounds carried by "the enemy" and therefore available for "liberation" if the STHF.

I'm sure some may think *I'm* the whacko, but I don't. :)

A .357 or .44 mag revolver with a lot of punch, a 1911 .45 for the up close and personal work, and sustained firepower, and the BHP in my sock!

:what:

I go back and forth. The .357 is concealable and it has a lot of punch. Revolvers are reliable.

On the other hand, the .45 is potent in its own right, and it is easier to reload mags than speedloaders. I have a P14-45ltd, so the scale is tipped, assuming I need alot of rounds.

When I travel, as I am now, I bring both. Which one gets to sleep with me tonight?:uhoh:

IMNSHO

Don't need a specific forum for "Serious Situations". [ The initals btw have been cussed and discussed also in "those " threads...too numerous to count, in regard to ROC for THR].

That said I was raised to be responsible for self, prepared, if you will. Be it the threat of missles from Cuba, riots, tornadoes...etc. We were also taught to shoot, shot placement, reliable with ammo in that gun everytime.

We had multiples of same guns, if things do get serious one can't run to gunsmith now can they?. Intead of Iwannacoolgunvirus, we saved our monies, had patience and often bought two or three used quality firearms instead of buying just one new one...especially one of the latest greatest whatever that came down the pike...

I have always used 1911 style, BHP , or old smith wheel guns, K frames especially for CCW. The 1911 style especially is favored by me , it is an tool unto itself, takes the abuse, and a few parts put back will keep this gun running...Especially the closer to the "old Gov't "model one stays.

So I don't have to pick one, I have CCW-ed for many many years. The CCW is most likely to be gun you have when you need it--it should be. Patience and paying cash, has served me well. Lessons learned from elders still used and applied.

I apply this to other firearms as well...shotguns, rifles.
I only keep CCWs here in my dwelling...any long guns are kept elsewhere. Then again do I ? Was there cash , patience and used guns involved perhaps...? ;)

Just my .02
YMMV

Well... my options are a BHP or a FEG HP. If I've got to trust my life to one, it's the Browning. That's not to say that I don't trust the FEG, however. I like the fact that it's 9mm for reasons previously mentioned in the thread.

Cheers,
Wes

A Colt Delta Elite with a little reliablity work done (a steel guide rod would be a good thing). Or my newly-converted Colt Mk IV Goverment in 10mm. :)

Good power in a reliable, accurate package.

In the events described in the original post, my sidearm would be a Remington 1100 or 1187 with the barrel cut down to even with the tube mag and the stock also chopped accordingly.

I wanted to make one point about the guns "on paper" and guns "off paper" concept as brought up earlier in this thread.

I used to worry about guns being on or off paper.

However, I came to the following realization.

When the day comes that you legitimately need to worry if your guns are on paper or off paper, then that's the day the war starts anyway, so who cares if guns are on paper or off paper as long as you have possession of them when that day starts?

I've heard people tell the "boiled frog" story too many times.

Sure, they will use incrementalism, but sooner or later they will have to actually make a move.

Even the so-called "AW Ban" didn't do much, substantively, to get rid of guns.

Hell, I didn't buy my first rifle until after the AW Ban. Even though I waited until then to buy a rifle, I've got a safe full of semi-auto rifles and a truckload of normal capacity (as opposed to restricted capacity) magazines.

Sooner or later, the antis will have to actually take a substantive step, which means confiscation.

It happened in California already with sporterized SKS rifles.

So, why didn't "The War" start then and there?

Because there were other less painful options left to the SKS owners of California. The ban applied only in California. It was too easy to just move across the state line, or merely not comply with the rule, or just turn in your SKS and use that money to buy something else.

Even with all the horrible gun laws in California, there is still the option to get out to a free state.

But eventually, the antis will have to make a nationwide, substantive move intended to result in widespread, wholesale confiscation.

No matter how incremental the process is, that step will have to be taken someday.

"Strategies and Tactics" would be a good place for all SHTF threads, but nobody wants to post them in there because not alot of people read that forum compared to most of the others.
