You can buy a small tube of gun oil/cleaner for anywhere from $3-9 with a brand name on it.

You can mix up your own oil/cleaner for a fraction of the cost. Works just as good or even better!

My current mix is 1 part Mobil1 5-30w, 1 part STP oil additive, 2 parts ATF with Dexron. Cost is $.24/oz.

The ATF is great at cleaning deep into residue, STP makes it stick where its put, and the Mobil1 oil being synthetic is awesome for long term storage.

My newest mix is 3 parts Peak Synthetic grease, and 1 part NAPA copper anti seize grease. I now have my own "Glock Gold Grease". About $8 total cost for both, and you have enough stuff for GENERATIONS.

BTW, the title should read Think not Thing, sorry

Be safe

I have been using Ed's Red for a long time now. Since very few of my guns even see "Long term storage", I don't even bother lubing them after cleaning since the ATF and kerosine are lubricant enough.

I have also started using mobile1 for those that do get stored. I cringe when I think about all of the hundreds of dollars I used to spend in my younger years trying all of the latest and greatest cleaners and lubes.

I have been using motor oil for a long time both in the shop and the gun room. We have a few of the old school oil cans and long neck oilers left from days gone by.
FWIW I have been known to pull the dipstick on the truck to make and old 1100 cooperate. If it's good enough to keep the innards of a motor running for 150k miles it'll probably be good for your gun too.

I buy a small bottle of gun oil once every couple of years or so. No hassle and it costs me about as much as a McDonald's hamburger.

For storage, Mobil 1 is all I use. Cheap, incredibly effective (clings to metal like it was a lover), and it doesn't smell.
ATF stinks, bothers my skin, and never had ever been advertised as a corrosion-preventive agent.

At $20 a bottle, NOTHING compares to Ballistol.

enjoy your biodegradable and combustible? cleaner.

be safe.

After 50 years of shooting, gun smithing, and collecting guns.

I'm still trying to figure out how much dang oil you guys use on guns, in a lifetime?

Saving .10 cents a year by draining the dregs out of empty motor oil cans is akin to Dumpster Diving for half-eaten hamburgers!

For storage (rust prevention) you want a non-detergent oil if you can find one. Almost all automotive oils have detergent. CLP probably does too (isn't that what the "C" stands for?).

My current mix is "drippings from the Mobil 1 5W30 jug when I'm done changing the oil in my car". Cost is zilch, since it's dregs I would have otherwise disposed of.

;)

Original comment deleted by me as potentially inappropriate for THR.

But the comment was the result of a google search for "gun oil facts". I'll let the members take it from there if they wish.

umm, i believe that is a different kind of "gun" oil. That Gun Oil is used ah, by some in society to slick up an area that normally doesn't lubricate itself.

YEAH, I THINK WERE DONE HERE. TIME TO LOCK THIS BEFORE IT GETS OUTTA CONTROL

be safe.

Bear fat works well, too. It doesn't go rancid like pork.
Whale oil is very fine, maybe you could get the disposal contract for a beached whale.

I have all sorts of lubricants around. I haven't bought "gun oil" in years; free samples at matches and motor oil serve well.

I am getting low on M-Pro 7 bore cleaner, though. I got some Wipe Out products to try to clean a barrel with stubborn lead and coating deposits. They seem to be ok for regular use and I have a good supply.
