Think shotguns will ever be "cool" again?

A younger version of me didn't find them all that cool, but now I see them for what they are and have a better understanding of their actual limitations and advantages over other guns. It's funny, Dave McCracken had a thread going here back in 2004 that was addressing the same issue sort of, like when will shotguns ever become popular again...... I think if I was going to only have one long gun, It'd be an 870 or 590.

My first gun, down here in backwoods MS was…. a shotgun. Why ? Because it could do everything I needed to do, and then some.

A few month ago a got a Remington 1100 410 sport with replaceable chokes. Just a KEWL now as it was 50 years ago when I first started wanting one. Life and want for it finally came together

I have a couple Wingmasters, and a old Winchester 1200. I love a good 12 gauge pump.

Those Russian shot guns were pretty popular for a while, until they all got banned.

One of the problems I have with making a comment on this topic is that I have no industry data to quote to support my response.
Except we do have manufacturing data that the ATF publishes annually. Just like the FBI Crime Reports they take a couple years to be published.

i.e. Summary page.

Off topic….If I read this right there were 456 .32 caliber domestic revolvers made or sold in 2022. I’m shocked the number is that low.

TAROSEAN… thanks for that link. Don’t know how for all these years I was unaware of this report. Will set that as a link for access to their 2023 and subsequent annual sales reports.

Every time I hit the shotgun threads area and still see this thread running I cringe. I would bet that the total weight of lead thrown down range with shotguns would dwarf anything the rifle and hand gunners could muster.
You don't see high school rifle or pistol clubs much but trap/skeet/sporting is growing by leaps and bounds (I'm a coach).
Cool! Come to Sparta, or a state shoot, or even a high school trap championship and learn what is cool.
I did my CCW renewal class this morning and had to fire 30 rounds to qualify. I only scored 288/300 but then thought "heck, my last 1600+ rounds this year were at trap" and I averaged 94%.
Cool!
Look around. Even three gun has a shotgun component.

Interesting data there. Thank you for posting the links. I, too, was unaware of that report.

If clearing trenches becomes popular again then i estimate their popularity will increase as well.

I noticed more shotguns from sds available after the war in Ukraine started.

Related idk

As long as the capacity for them is low and factory buckshot remains high, no.

There's a reason AR's are so much more popular and why the standard issue weapom for soldiers is the M4/M16 and not shotguns.
I think that for the military, effective range is pretty important too. For home defense, not so much.

There’s a whole lot more use for shotguns beyond tacticrap, home defense, and truckguns.
Hunting feathered game
Hunting furred game in oppressive states.
Varmint like coyotes. A local kills over a hundred each year with a standard 1100.
Trap.
Skeet (four gauges, 12, 20, 28, 410.
Sporting.
Five Stand.
Bunker.
Olympic trap
And o and on

Criminently! I already posted in this thread sometime back. There's been a lot of asinine posts since then by people who evidently don't know how popular shotguns are. It's less annoying to try to have a conversation with anti-gunners.

Shotguns are extremely popular and they're not going away anytime soon, but if you're a Manson Family cult member type AR fanatic you'll break out in hives and need your Albuterol inhaler ever time you see something that's not an AR. God help you. This thread is an embarrassment, except for those weighing in with nice pics and comments about various shotguns.

It's people who don't know freakin' schlitz about shotguns who are uninformed, unsophisticated and uncool. It's not the shotguns.

Not gonna lie, I'm kind of jealous of the wm in the middle. Does it have an armory engraving? They were all but giving away those old armory shotguns years ago, I wish I'd been onto them when they were widely available.

There are plenty of folks who buy shotguns and ARs, lean them against the wall and never train or shoot them in their Self-Defense dream scenario. Both are full of pro and con mythology. What else is new. The answer, I think that I posted awhile ago, is to train with each and then shoot each in competitions that might be close to actual usage. Can you run a shotgun under some stress? Same with a carbine? Which works better for you?

Better than endless discussion of 'stopping' power.

We often confuse versatility for being the best option. If someone breaks into my house I don't need or want options. I can consider my personal needs and tactics as well as any penetration issues I need to mitigate. I want to grab a gun and be ready to do what I have to do.

It's from the Ohio National Guard. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, so that made it even cooler.

I was checking my email one morning I think in 2018, and saw a email from Sportsman's Outdoor Super Store for trade in Remington 870's. My first thought was I don't need another shotgun, but ended up opening the email. They sold out in a couple hours. I don't think mine was ever issued. It shows no signs of ever being carried or even shot. A lot of the fixed stock ones were kinda rough I heard. I bought the folder because I figured it would be more valuable, even thou it cost a whopping $10 more than the fixed stock version. The stock is marked Remington, and Law Enforcement Only.

I would have probably grabbed a couple fixed stocks armory WM's, one with and one without a bayonet and maybe a folder too ;)

Not an opposing view, but your post just made me think that if you asked most folks in the 20th century what the best HD weapon was, the most commonly suggested all purpose firearm was probably a 12ga shotgun. The scales have probably tipped in favor of the semi auto rifle like an AR or PCC in the 21st century and I would probably have my weight footed on tradition by using and/or suggesting a 12ga but I think it's still a relevant firearm even though a weapon like an AR has lots of superior characteristics above a 1-2-4-5-6 shot shotgun like capacity, recoil impulse, controllability. The learning curve in terms of training and being effective with a long gun is steeper with a shotgun.....

Just my thoughts. I bet it would be hard to find a citizen involved in any kind of self defense scenario that would say they wished they had one over the other, and anybody that died as a consequence of not having one over the other would also be hard to find. This is forum nerd stuff....... 🤓
