Thinking about IDPA

how can you find IDPA matches in your local area? on the website they list all their big pro-matches, but do they have matches for ametures to just show up try your hand?

I've never shot competitively before, but I've been wanting to do it for a good while now. all I could find near me is a shop/range that hosts NPPC?? never heard of it before. anyone familiar with it?

anyway, good topic. I'd love to get into this sometime soon.

Nola, look at the club finder listing on the IDPA website; click on your state, and all the in-state affiliate clubs will be listed, with a contact for each. Call up the listed contact, and they will tell you when the club matches are.

NRA's PPC (Police Pistol Combat) is sort of the grandfather of the action or practical shooting sports, begun in the 1950s I believe. It uses a simple course of fire and can be shot on a more rigid fixed range than can IDPA or USPSA with their movement and complicated scenarios.

Think of it at a bullseye match with multiple stances.

I too am planning on starting to shoot IDPA soon. Quick question about mags. I will be using my Sig p226 which has 2 15 round mags. if I understand the rulebook, I am limited to 10 rounds. Do I need to buy 10 round mags or just load 10 in my existing mags?

Just load 10 in whatever mags you have. You may(must) have 11 total in the gun (10 in mag, one in chamber) when you start a stage unless the course of fire dictates otherwise, but you cannot have more than 10 in a mag at any time.

(... Yes, most guys do load 11 in their first mag so they don't have to use a "Barny" mag to load the chamber. However, don't get sloppy. If you end up with 11 in another mag and fire 12 sometime without reloading you will get a penalty. Probably a big one.)

I shot my first Action Pistol event today and had a great time. It was like riding a roller-coaster--it's not hard to see how one could spend every weekend at this. :)

Are Blackhawk! Serpa holsters allowed in IDPA?

Yes, they are legal, as long as they are the standard SERPA, and not a dropped/offset, or drop-leg version. Some clubs may frown on them however...

I have never seen a SERPA "frowned on."
I have seen them snickered at when Joe Tackytickle omits pushing the button and gives himself a wedgie. The plain open top Blackhawk CQB is not bad.

Some people feel that they're not safe as a new shooter full of adrenaline could slide their finger into the trigger guard and squeeze the trigger on the draw.

While there's nothing wrong with the holster as such, I also wouldn't recommend it for a brand new shooter.
