I love my Ruger GP100 4" .357 Magnum and I shoot it well but it's just too big for SD carry.
So I've been looking for a snub 2".At a lgs I saw a S&W for $1100! Ouch! I could buy three 605s and still have money left for ammo. Do any of you guys have the Taurus 605 in your carry rotation?
And btw no one is going to tell me the Smitty is three times the gun as the 605

a 15 year old 605 is my current daily carry.

You likely won't be shooting much .357 through it. Not fun.

Wow! Which S&W snub nose was $1100?
I have been seeing 642s and 442s for $450 - $475.
I have no advice on the Taurus since I have no experience with them. Yet.

i have had a taurus 85 38sp since 1984. for 25 years, due to my locales, it was my one and only firearm. an excellent piece. fitted with pachmayr grips, i only shoot 158gr ball ammo through it and felt perfectly well protected. i added another m85 a couple of years ago, just as fine, though the older m85 feels a tad more beefy. my sister’s only firearm is a bedside m85.

a new, $300 taurus 85, 605, 856 with a lifetime warranty should serve any civilian quite well. if a m605 is too pricey i wouldn’t bother with 357mag out of a snubbie. 38sp+p from a m85 or m856 should suffice and be more accurate.

Taurus makes a 605 3" s/s for $389

S&W mod360 .357 mag $1109. At Range USA

Wow! It appears they aren’t the only ones listing the 360 at that price. I came very close to buying one of these for $460 at a discount store in Oregon a few years ago. Not that I wish I would have, I have no regret regarding this, but if you had told me that 4 years from now they will sell for $1100 I would have thought you to be nuts.

I dont have one of the metal framed 605s but I have 2 of the poly model. One of them has worked flawless the other one has had an issue with the hammer hanging up since it came out of the box so I don't shoot it anymore, its more of for looks. The other one however, has been shot a good bit. Some people say it hurts their hand when it's loaded with 357 magnum but it doesn't bother me. I guess decades of shooting big bore hand cannons have taken away any sensitivity I might otherwise have had. It is as accurate as any other 2 inch snub I've ever shot. I can stay in a 12 inch circle at 20 feet which is good enough for me as I'm not the best with snubbies. If I remember correctly I paid 300 for one and 280 for the other. For the price, they get the job done, if you get one that works.

I've owned... I think ten small-framed Taurus revolvers. Eight 38's, a 32, and a 22. I haven't owned a 605, but might pick a 905 in 9mm one of these days.

The 32 had issues, was sent back to the factory twice, and still wasn't fixed to my satisfaction.

The others all went bang just fine. Some of the DA triggers were way too heavy, but replacing the mainspring takes about five minutes. The ones with good triggers are very solid handguns. There were two of them that I carried often. I use one now as my practice snubby.

I'd get the Taurus, NP, if it has a decent trigger. These are the two that I happen to own just now.

I have a 605 that I bought a short while ago (price was $320? at Rural King). I plan on carrying it periodically, but have not "shot-it-in" yet.

It appears to be of decent design & mfr and, small as it is, fits comfortably in my large hand. I have painted the front fluorescent orange (on a base of bright flat white). I was happy to find that it fits well in the leather pancake holster & pocket holster that I use with my 856.

5rd HKS 36 speedloaders work fine with it and I also always have a leather 2x2x2 (3x3 w/ .44) on my belt when carrying wheelguns.

FWIW ...

Enjoy! :)

All the guys that complain about old Taurus firearms don't consider the advances in metallurgy and especially manufacturing techniques.

Affordable CAD, 5 axis CNC machines and laser quality control have improved products for all manufacturers.

Taurus seems to be serious about moving the perception of their products from junk to quality.

I would not hesitate to purchase a new Taurus.

I owned a 605 for a while but basically replaced it with a 2in SP101-----to be honest, there was nothing wrong with the Taurus, I just like the Ruger better.

All that was ever shot out of either of them were full power .357 loads----the Ruger is scary accurate, even much better than my GP100.

My only two Taurus revolvers (2" M85 and 3" M942). The M85 was $200 NIB online and my M942 was $350 at a LGS in the middle of the pandemic. Zero issues out of either of them. They do everything a Smith can do other than look pretty and have better warranty services.

If Taurus make a 6 shot DA/SA Executive model in 357mag with adjustable or driftable rear sights, I'm all in.

Send in the bad one? Shame having a defensive revolver that doesn’t function properly.

I got a model 60 for 650 total, if I didn't I'd look at thr 605.

I think I'd go for it. They're really handy. Load down with 38 jhp for daily carry or home.

But, you can load up with 180 grain magnum hardcast for hiking.

Not a steady diet, your hand and the gun won't hold up to it. Neither would the model 60. But it will for a handful of shots.

That revolver guy Sam on YouTube did a pocket gun hardcast test. He specifically tested the 605 with buffalobore hardcast 180 grain magnum rounds.

He simulated bear with ballistic plates and gel etc. Those rounds completely blew through everything.

Talk about versatility...

Prices came down on the 60-15... I paid $700 for mine used in good condition during the pandemic. I should have waited.

I got my almost unfired 605 out of the LGS consignment case for $199. It's early '00s production example and experienced no issues. Full-house .357s get your attention.
