This is a Sodbuster thread

A very good knife. I try to buy case knives because they are still made in USA. I recommend it.

Just picked up my first Sodbuster, a black handled stainless Junior at Lowe's, $17.95. It took a razor edge, seems to hold it well. Was a little rough opening/closing, but some time working it back and forth helped a lot. Smoothed the back of the blade and some other sharp edges with 800 grit wet/dry. I like it a lot. Have a small collection of working knives - Svord Peasant, Opinels, Douk-Douk, Okapi, etc., and this will be a fine addition. Although I'm considering using it for EDC and temporarily retiring the Buck 301. Disappointed to learn that Case has discontinued the Carbon steel large Sodbuster. So I ordered a medium size Brown Mule from Ragweed Forge.

Speaking of Ragnar's Ragweed Forge, in addition to the Kissing Crane Brown Mule Sodbuster, he's got another little knife that deserves mention in any sodbuster thread and that's the excellent EKA compact with oversized plastic grips and Sandvik steel for $12. The regular EKA Swede 88 locking folder is great, but hasn't been a good bargain for a number of years due to dollar devaluation. But, for whatever reason, the little EKA compact has been a steady bargain consistantly. It fails the handle to blade ratio that some of the dress crowd insist on, but for a simple blade for actual use it's pretty good, (as are the various sized Brown Mules).

I have a custom sodbuster on order , from Kerry Hampton , he calls it " Knuttbuster" , should be here by end of summer ( got on his list awhile ago).

His work is very impressive.
An example of his work:

I finally picked up the full sized Sodbuster at Bass Pro Shops yesterday and it's been riding in my back pocket ever since. I used it around the yard cutting dead palm fronds from my coconut trees and also to cut some St. Augustine grass runners that started growing over my patio. What a great work knife! Now I want variations; look out wallet.

The Sodbuster works great in the kitchen, as well. After a little blade cleaning it cut up potatoes & onions for home fries. Cheap, sharp, & versatile. I want more!

First post from a fellow knife lover that is just getting into firearms.

Here's my 2008 SS Case Sodbusterr Jr. Love it.

I have since sanded all the etching off the blade as I can't stand writing on the blade.

Hey Gumby, I too don't care for the blade etching. I scrubbed my blade with Bar Keepers Friend (a stainless steel cleaner) and the etching is now very faint.

I have a Kerry Hampton KHnutbuster. It's my favorite knife and the one I carry most often.

Here's a better pic of my Mooremaker.

How much was the Khnutbuster? I know Kerry's waiting list is years long but I'm wondering what he charges.

Rescued

Found this Case CV Sodbuster at a gunshow recently. It was in pretty sad shape. Rusty and pitted metal, loose pivot and generally sadly neglected. The seller said he got it from his wife's deceased uncle'd effects and it had been laying around for years.

I soaked it Kroil to loosen it up, and restored it's "walk and talk" in the process. I reset and peened the pivot to snug up and eliminate the blade wobble, and worked the metal and handle over with 00000 steel wool. Then I degreased it and let it steep in a bowl of cola to get a patina on it.

The previous owner shapened away quite a bit of the blade, but close examination revealed a consistantly maintained bevel. I touched it lightly for 4 swipes on a steel to expose the edge and followed with a couple of passes on a hard stone, finishing on the strop. Shaving sharp in less then 5 minutes!

I'm pleased with the results and the content with putting a honest blade back into service. It's become my EDC of late.

Oh, if this old knife could talk, what tales it might tell.

4 5/8"

4 5/8" closed; 3.4 oz.

That's the big one. I've got one that size in my EDC rotation.

She's a lot of knife. You can prepare a whole dinner with that knife, including the salad.

Congrats.

Thanks.
I already have a full sized soddy...I just like the way the blue handle looks. I use my black one in the kitchen all the time. In fact I made homefries with it last night. It's a great slicer...potatoes,onions, steak, whatever you throw at it.

I have been using Carl Schlieper sodbusters for about 30 years. My favorite knife. Like it better than my 45 year old folding Gerber. (About 3 5/8" blade.)
I bought a 5 3/4" closed Carl Schlieper sodbuster at a flea market today. Appears to have the numbers cut.
Biggest sodbuster I ever saw. Number 1423929.
Anyone seen one like that before?
