OK, y'all(sm and ArfinGreebly mainly) have convinced me that I need a Sodbuster Jr. Now I need to know which manufacturer to go with. I like plain, utilitarian knives, so yellow delrin or plain, brown wood scales are what I'm looking for. I don't personally care for stainless, so CV or a high carbon steel blade is a must. I am also not a wealthy man, so cost is a factor.
Are the new Case knives as good as they used to be? If not I can always buy used off of the site that shall not be named. Should I go with one of the german-made versions or a moore maker? Finally, what is the best place to buy them?

Thanks,
Brad

I'd get a Case, or Queen if they have that pattern. I just recently bought a Case Trapper with yellow handle. It is my favorite pattern. There is something about that yellow delrin that I just like.

I would go with the Case as the yellow or black Delrin slabs are a nice option.
I outfitted both Grandsons and both sons- in- laws with Sodbuster Jr's from my "score" and they luv 'em.

I had an Eye Brand Sod Buster years ago. I could get a better edge on that knife than any I've ever owned. The Sod Buster Jr.s are around 30 bucks.
A great working knife, forged steel, didn't look like they spent a whole lot of time making it perfect, fit and finish wise.

Thanks everybody, I plan on carrying this one for a year or so, and then giving it to my son. I think it will mean more that way, rather than just buying him a new one. Another plus to that will be that I get a new knife!

Case, Yeller Handle, Chrome Vanadium Sodbuster Jr.

This matches the Case Yeller Peanut with CV and the Case Barehead Slimline Trapper with CV...you do have a Peanut and Slimline Trapper, correct?

Unfortunately I am lacking in regards to yeller Case knives. However, I hope to remedy this in short order!
I could not find a Case Sodbuster Jr. or Sr. anywhere today, so I went with nitetrane98's suggestion and picked up an Eyebrand copy. You were correct in regards to fit but I do think it will suit my purposes. My only complaint is that it will not cut butter with the edge put on it by the manufacturer.
Thanks for everyones help and advice, if anybody knows where to buy Case knives in the College Station area please send me a pm.

Brad

I LOVE 'em! I got my first Case Sodbuster liner lock knife about thirty years ago at the PX in San Diego. All I have now is a ''Rough Rider Abelone'',but it's way better than I expected for an ''inexpensive'' knife.

no.5enfield,

Congratulations on getting a Sodbuster.
I don't know whom carries Case in your locale, and while I am a believer in supporting the local mom-n-pop businesses, many folks purchase knives online.

Have you checked with any Feed-n-Seed, Tractor Supply, Farm/Ranch stores in your area?
Call Case, and ask them, as I do not know how up to date their website is.

Another thing, while I grew up with and have used Norton and Arkansas stones forever, I am using diamond more and more today.

Arkansas are not always what they used to be. The Arkansas stones from Norton, and the one Case sells are fine.
Norton, either type is fine, still again it is getting more difficult for folks to find these stones locally.

So since I have and still do assist folks with freehand sharpening, and some folks do have some of the newer steels in knives , the diamond ones makes sense.

Breakage is another thing some folks have had occur with natural stones, so portable pocket size diamond sharpeners work for camping , fishing , hunting, hiking, emergency kits...etc.

I like the 3"x1" Eze-Lap diamond , with the groove down the center and leather pouch.
Fine grit is all you need.
This one has some heft.

I also like the credit card size diamond sharpeners, Eze_Lap is what I have had, still the DMT are fine.
Again the Fine will take care of 98% of what you need to do.

Somewhere...is my Case Sodbuster Jr, yeller handles, CV blades and Eze Lap , fine, credit card diamond sharpener.
I hope the thief that busted into my truck tool box, and snagged it with everything else..."fully appreciated and benefited from how that CV steel takes and holds a sharp edge".

*ahem*

Sorry to hear about your loss, I know how it feels. I will start looking in the feed stores next, maybe I can find a stockman locally. I will look into those Eze Lap sharpeners as well.

Thanks,
Brad

Lowe's home improvement stores carry the case sodbuster jr. However it has a black handle and stainless steel.

To see what patterns Case is making with Chrome Vanadium blades, and what handle materials.

W.R. Case.

Click on "knives" on the left side of menu.

Look under sub menu "2009 Knives" and click on "Chrome Vanadium Knives".

This will make narrowing down patterns with CV blades and handle materials easier.

Hope that assists the new folks.

A simple way to find a bunch of them for sale is to go to Google, click on the SHOPPING tab, then use Case Sodbuster Jr. as your search terms. You'll get page after page of them for sale from different vendors. I picked Black Creek Knives from Wilmington, NC, and got the Sodbuster Jr. in yellow Delrin and chrome vanadium steel for a total of $23.54.

I was at a retail tool supplier the other day and they had a Case Sodbuster Jr. for $13.95. I already have one or I would have picked it up. Their's was a yellow handled cv, but I have a black one with ss.

Sodbusters are a fantastic knife that is as close to a "do-it-all pocket knife that you can get. I used to have a collection of soddies from Case, Eye-Brand, Klass, Boker, Herter. When I downsized, I kept the yella CaseCV and the Eye-Brand, my two favorites. The Eye-Brand is a great work knife, as is the Case CV.

As a note on the effectivness of them for a wide range of use, there's a proffesional trapper in Frederick Maryland that trappes pidgeons for the live shoots a bunch of rich doctors have. He also hiresout as a game guide, and has field dressed everything there is in the way of game animals in Maryland. His only knife for the past 20 years has been a very old well used small yella soddie from Case. Recently he retired it for a new Case yella soddbuster in CV. He won't use anything else.

Sharpening

Let us know how that Eye Brand sharpens up.

I don't have one of those, and I've wondered how they measure up against the Böker and Case pieces that I have.

I don't think it's possible to have too many sodbusters.

Every so often I pick up another Case XX Sod Buster Jr (black, stainless) at the local Lowe's. I sprinkle them around in the tool boxes, any drawer where I keep pens, tools, and that sort of thing. I have an old beat-up (bought it used) yellow/CV Case Sod Buster Jr in a jacket pocket. It's assigned to that jacket. Closet, car, or on my person.

I've given one to each of my kids, have some in reserve for grandkids.

I've prepared meals with them (salad and all), hacked up boxes with them, opened packages, trimmed threads, portioned apples, cut dowels to size, and used them as steak knives.

I will always have a sodbuster.

Smokey Mountain has Boker Tree Brand (full size) and Bear and Sons (Jr. sized) for $19.99. Bear and Sons is USA made.

Pair of Sodbusters ( one in SS , yellow one in CV ) , Lone Wolf City Knife and a EDFU in D2 that I made for myself.

EDFU . . . Qua?

Every Day Fixed Utility?

That's a sweet piece.

For us civilians, what's one of those go for?
