On a YouTube channel that I have forgotten the name they stated that the US military uses in excess of a million pounds of black powder. Something about it being used in fuses of all types due to the consistent burn rates. And I know that a lot of things on YouTube is B.S.

I don't know about a million pounds but they do use far more than us civies with our stinky antique guns.

Real Black Powder has a shelf life of something close to forever.
It's been documented where they pulled kegs of Black Powder from ship wrecks a couple centuries old, dried it out, and it went boom.
Rifles and muskets believed to have been loaded well over 100 years fired off without a problem.
Just keep your powder dry, and if it gets wet, dry it out.

Over the years people have been killed and injured by old black powder guns and explosive cannon balls and shells. The guns by people who thought they weren't live or loaded. As to explosive cannon balls and shells they are mostly unexploded Civil War ordinance in the US. Just because it is old doesn't mean it can't injure or kill you or someone near by.

I don't know about kegs of powder brought up from shipwrecks. The kegs would have rotted away. They have brought up loaded cannons and got the powder out. When dried it was still viable. Yes there have been people killed with dug up Civil War ordnance. 60 miles from here back in the 70's a man plowed up a Springfield rifle barrel. He decided it would be perfect to repair a broken gate hinge. He stuck the breech in his forge and the .58 minie ball hit him between the eyes.

The Vasa is an exceptional ship. Most sailing ships are nothing more than a few timbers and cannons. Divers usually find the cannons first.

Seattle Washington, I did see caps about 4 months ago, they had about 20 round tins. I thought about getting some, but didn’t. They have BP Substitute but I kidda want to try the real thing.

Do you guys ever carry your BP guns in the woods or on the ranch. I’m think I might try.
When I’m at home, yes. Oh, and usually in the truck or on the side by side. So yeah, depending on the mood… we don’t really have any sort of self defense needs here. It’s been years since I’ve heard of an assault of any kind in the county. Not counting bar scuffles of course. Sometimes I might take down a coyote and we do have lots of bears and lions but they just aren’t a threat to people in 99.99% of those encounters. But heck, if you’re not packing, you’re nearly naked!

I carry a pocket pistol to take out the trash here in Seattle. Yes, it’s that bad here. Random attacks are a thing here… anyways, we have open carry here and a decent CCW system here. I always wanted to carry a SAA or a big Remington Iron on my hip!! and of course a modern pistol hidden. Scare the liberals with my beautiful “Musket Gun” from the 1800’s lol
