I have recently been given custody of a friends Thompson 50 to play with along with 100 .495 ball, 100 caps, 100 paper circles, and a pound of Pyrodex RS muzzleloading powder. My question in how many grains of powder should I use for normal uses. If I could get a min and max that would be great.

here is the list from tc site.

Renegade & Hawken, 50 caliber
Round ball loads (.490", 175 grains):
50 grains FFg - 1357 FPS - 761 ft.lbs
60 grains FFg - 1434 FPS - 850 ft.lbs
70 grains FFg - 1643 FPS - 1115 ft.lbs
80 grains FFg - 1838 FPS - 1396 ft.lbs
90 grains FFg - 1950 FPS - 1571 ft.lbs
100 grains FFg - 2052 FPS - 1739 ft.lbs
110 grains FFg - 2135 FPS - 1883 ft.lbs
Maxi-Ball loads (370 grains):
80 grains FFg - 1271 FPS - 1328 ft.lbs
90 grains FFg - 1344 FPS - 1484 ft.lbs
100 grains FFg - 1418 FPS - 1652 ft.lbs

In my .50 Cal. T/C Hawkin I shoot 45 Grains of FFG with the .495 Ball and
.013" patch with excellent accuracy.
For Deer hunting, I like the T/C Maxi-Ball in front of 90 Grains of FFG.
From the bench at 50 yards I shoot clover leaf groups with this load and I have dropped 15 deer, ALL one shot kills.

I won the Missouri State Championship one year with one, and my most
accurate load was 70 grs Goex FFF and a .495 ball and ,020 patch.

SimplyChad, Just to be accurate, patches are not made of paper but are made of 100% cotton. We're going to need a more detailed description of these "paper circles". If they are relatively thick they could be felt wads. Believe me when I say that this forum is the place to be when asking about starting up in the world of muzzleloading. We are kind and understanding about explaining the mysteries of muzzleloading.
