I'm looking to get a flintlock muzzleloader for late deer season in PA. I was offered a TC Pennsylvania Hunter by someone. Has anyone had any major problems with these guns? It looks to be in good shape judging by the pictures the guy sent to me. He said it has a 32" octogon to round barrel. The guy offered it to me for $100. Is there any reason I should not take it?

Thanks

It's difficult to judge a muzzle loader solely by it's cosmetic appearance because there could always be unseen issues. However, $100 is a very fair price and even if the barrel isn't perfect, the rest of the gun should be worth it alone.
The older TC flintlocks do have hammer geometry that many people, [even TC] admits was less than optimal. The hammer was shorter than the newly redesigned one that replaced it, and many say that they eat up flints quite rapidly. Other than that they do function well, and if you experience any extreme problems, it can be sent in to TC for a hammer replacement. It's not an automatic free hammer replacement, but often it does get replaced for free, especially if you bring it to the attention of the service manager or experience continuing problems, or you can just simply pay for the new hammer.
Everyone compliments the function of the new hammer design and there may be a redesigned vent liner for it as well. It depends on how old the gun is.
TC has the best lifetime warranty and customer service of any muzzle loader outfit in the world, period. They will replace just about anything for free, just send the item in to them and they will pay for the return shipping. And the warranty even extends to used guns.
It sounds like it's worth the money, happy hunting. ;)

Thanks for you input. I'm going to take a look at it today. If it's in good shape, I will probably buy it.

Does anyone know how or where i could track down a manual for this gun? I want to be sure of the powder loads and such.

Thanks

I own an older T/C flint and it is the most reliable flintlock you'll ever find. I don't care that the flints don't last for dozens of shots. I want a gun that goes off every time.

$100 is a steal for this fine American-made rifle.

T/C will send you a manual for free, just call or email them. As for eating flints, almost all flintlocks need tuned, and that not only increases reliability and decreases lock and ignition time, but reduces wear on the lock and the flints. Try English Black flints. In a decent lock, it's not uncommon to get over 100 shots on them. I'm getting 125-140 shots per flint from a relatively untuned Austin & Halleck.

Again, Thanks for all the help. I did email TC in an effort to track down a manual. I am new to this flintlock stuff, and really am not sure what you are talking about when you say "tune." Could someone explain this to me? I am sure I will have more questions as I go also.

Thanks

I have not heard back from Thompson Center so I was wondering if someone here could help. I would like to know what powder to use, and also how much (grains)? Any other useful info would be helpful also as I am new to flintlocks.

Thanks

You will have to find a source for FFFFg blackpowder. 4F powder is used in the pan of a flintlock. Pyrodex or substitutes will not work.

My favorite fun .50 caliber flintlock load is 15 gr. 4F powder first, followed by 60 gr. Pyrodex and a patched .490 round ball. FFFFg powder goes in the pan last.

T/C manual says

Not to go over 90gr FFg powder. Raxafarian was right in the ballpark. I use 80gr FFFg, so even 100gr FFg should be fine. I use a Pennsylvania Hunter in caplock. I use FFFg because it burns cleaner in my rifle. Every rifle has a mind of its own, yours may prefer FFg and will likely be most accurate with a slightly different charge.

I have been loading 90 grains of FFG pyrodex with a patch and roundball and seem to be fairly accurate. Thanks for all the help.

Pyrodex bites it in a flintlock. Get some GOEX black FFG or FG and prime with the same.
