Thoughts on "nightstand" guns

Reliability, reliability, reliability.

My nightstand gun rotates between Kimber Pro Carry II, Kimber Pro Raptor II, and Glock 19.

I used to keep a revolver. Now I keep a Taurus PT92, with a PS90 as a backup.

Overkill?

Last year one of my neighbors had their house broken in to by *5* armed intruders, specifically looking for guns.

5, 6, out of a revolver, 7 or 8 out of a 1911, even 12 shots in a Glock 21 might not be enough when it's 5 on 1 odds.

So now, it's high cap 9mm's strategically positioned, with the 50 round PS90 as backup. If I can't do it with 16/17 rounds + 50 more, it isn't getting done.

My advice, examine the threat profile in your area and plan accordingly. Talk to the cops, watch the news, get an idea of how many bad guys you are likely to face.

Here, it's large groups hitting isolated country homes in the middle of the night. Police response time is slow (20-30 minutes). Bad guys know it.

Where do you live? Not the address, just the city. I'm looking to move...

No need for concealment so I want a full sized gun in a powerful cartridge capable of mounting a light. At present that means a RIA 1911 Tactical .45ACP with the full length rail, a Streamlight weaponlight and Chip McCormick 10rd magazines. Night sights are present but not totally necessary.

Seriously? You think that qualifies as a justification to just point and shoot at something in the dark that you haven't identified?....

Yep! If it's not my wife, who is huddled in the bathroom/closet with a cell phone and an 8-shot 12ga 870, and it's in my house after dark, it needs to be shot.

I'll admit, it's more for the look, but it's loaded with Pyrodex and round ball, '58 Remmy.

It's right by my head and, trust me, I know how to load and care for these things, have been shooting 'em for 40 years now. I wouldn't recommend it to most unless they know how to care and feed a cap and ball revolver, of course. I take this one out back frequently and shoot it, always goes bang. That, too, is an advantage I have now, live in the woods where I can shoot when I want to. I seal it with clear nail polish and it's in the AC. It's quite accurate and makes a .45 caliber hole even if I do call it a .44.

My shotgun's in the corner, but I might need something fast and this'll do the job.

I generally prefer revolvers for storage long term if you're not shootin' the gun often. Nothing wrong with a .38 special, kept one in the bedside table for years. Truth be told, my daily carry is in that bedside table if I have time to get to it.

One of our local towns (Lincoln, pop 14,500) police dept now has two armored personnel carriers.

I have no idea what the heck for.

Meanwhile, the state can't pay my kid's school on time and educational programs are getting cancelled.

Funny thing, that.

Police departments end up with all sorts of toys when there is grant money arround. I knew a cop back in the 1970's who was complaining that his department had been given a BELL JET RANGER helicopter by the Dept. of JUSTICE. The problem was that they asked for a light plane. They had a pilot who could fly the plane, but not a helicopter!

However, there was federal money and no one ever says no. You can always try to sell it second hand or trot it out when on holidays or in front of the media or polilticians.

When my agency finally decided to issue bullet proof vests, they decided to save money and have them made by CONVICTS!

This is just how government works.
