i thought i'd share with you folks my experience with several different knives in afghanistan.

crkt m16-14: i bought this one just before i left and i've been pretty disappointed. all the steel parts rusted from sweat. the knife was only moderately sharp from the factory. the liner lock gets out of alignment somehow so that sometimes it jams up on the other side of the blade making it difficult to close again. bottom line: about what you'd expect for thirty bucks.

combat elite tas-g auto: sharp, solid, well fit. the finish wore through pretty quickly in some spots. when it got dirty and especially when it's cold it doesn't open very fast and sometimes not completely. bottom line: quality knife but better suited to clean environments.

mod mpak: hopefully i won't have to buy another folder. the spring on this one is VERY strong, the blade is sharp and the finish seems alot harder. this knife also has a button that sticks out quite a bit further which makes it easier to use with gloves on. bottom line: i love it.

cold steel srk: another winner and not too expensive, either. the knife is very sharp, if a bit brittle (i broke a tiny piece of the tip just a day after buying it) the knife just feels right in the hand; it is a simple and effective cutting tool like most of cold steel's products. the sheath leaves a little to be desired. it is kydex with a nylon belt loop which can be attached wherever you like. problem is, with it set up in the normal fashion, the sheath pulls up a little when you pull the knife out. i had to mount it upside down. bottom line: a well, built, solid knife.

gerber multitool: couldn't live without it, though the smallest flathead bit broke. i'm not sure what model it is (it was issued) but it works great. my chief had a gerber with a gimmicky pushbutton thingy that popped the pliers open and it broke pretty quickly so you might want to stay away from that model.

hope you guys find the above pertinent and useful.

Hi there,

Thank you for the report.

It is great to learn how knives perform in the "field".

I am a little surprised about the Cold Steel SRK tip failure. You wouldn't think that it could happen based on their "proof" videos.

Again, many thanks for your service.

Best,

Chris

they use a high carbon steel in that blade, which i think is more brittle than other steels. in any case it's not their fault. i dropped it on concrete:rolleyes:

High carbon is actually less brittle...but you did drop on concrete ;) Glad to hear you made it back okay.

If a knife is brittle it's because the heat treat was not done right, or it was not tempered enough. But they're not made to drop like that either. :)

thanks for the suggestion but it's basically impossible to get a package out of here. it doesn't bother me much, anyway; the chip is about a millimeter and it is a working knife, after all.

Send the Gerber back to them. They will repair or replace it free of charge.
I returned a multi tool that I broke both knife blades and they replaced it no questions asked.
I don't have the address but just send it to Gerber Portland, OR and they will get it.
