With my aging eyes, the standard buckhorn sights on most lever action rifles no longer work that well for me. I'm considering getting the Winged Skinner sights for my Marlin 336 .30-30 and the barrel mounted rear for my Henry Big Boy Steel Carbine .357.
What do you all think of these options? On the Henry, how does the barrel mount compair to the receiver mount? I like the idea that I'm less likely to need to change the front sight.

I have the Williams FP peep on my a Winchester 94. Not Skinner but I like it and am better with it than with the standard sights. I'm not as good as with a scope, but I like the handy-ness and looks of the lever gun without the scope. It's my forest gun.

I am considering a Henry Big Boy Steel purchase and would like to put something on the receiver.

I'd go for Skinner's receiver mounted option on your Big Boy vs a barrel mounted. More accurate and better sight picture withe aperture.

I have used the Skinner and Willams FP. I prefer the Williams. It is easier to adjust, mounted lower and further back, and can be used with differing patridge front sights of your choice just like any other receiver sight.

That said, I’m not sure there is a Williams option for Henry rifles without undo modification.

Like others have said above. The aperture sight seem to make groups easier for my old eyes. I too have used both Williams and Skinner sights. I agree the Williams are easier to adjust, but the Skinners seem a little studier. Your mileage may vary;).....Tentwing

I love aperture (peep) sights, but the rear should be as close to the eye as possible, keeping in mind recoil, etc. I made a copy of the Skinner, mounted it on my Big Boy, and was quite disappointed. So, I got a Marbles' tang-mounted rear, which I VERY much prefer, because it is so much closer to my eye.

I will have to disagree with that. I had the Skinner sight on my Henry close as you mentioned, but later put on a Skinner further down. Much better. I am not saying one way is better than the other, just that everyone's eyes are different. I just came back yesterday from the Ophthalmologist. Nice guy who loves shooting. After I had my prescription made, we got into a discussion about sights and shooting. I told him what I wanted for a pair of shooting glasses and he prescribed me a separate prescription specific for shooting glasses. Every person should find the best aperture sight that is best suited for them. And that includes placement of the sight. JMO
