Celebrity Poker Shootout

Bring your favorite firearm to the poker table target and take aim.

TARGET DOWNLOAD : http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/CARD.pdf

Shoot FIVE (5) rounds per target for each entry. One entry per class is allowed but you may enter as many classes as you wish and have proper firearms to meet the requirements.

The standard distances will be 10 yards for Pistol and 25 yrds for Rifle. (plus 50 yrds and 100yrds may be attempted for supported rifle classes.)

Some reminders on match procedures:
You are expected to shoot the match targets only for score and only the approved number of targets for each class. You should not be shooting several match targets and submitting the best score.

Scoring:

Royal Straight Flush = 100 Points [A,K,Q,J,10 of Diamonds only]
5 Of a Kind = 95 Points
4 of a Kind = 90 Points
Full House = 85 Points (3 of a kind plus 2 of a kind)
Flush = 80 Points (5 cards of same suit)
Straight = 75 (cards in sequence; i.e. 3,4,5,6,7)
3 of a kind = 70 Points
2 Pair = 65 Points
Pair = 60 Points
Unmatched cards = Add up the card value (2-11 points per card; ACE = 11)

Unless they are all unmatched, extra cards do not count (i.e. - you can't get 4 of a kind and an Ace for 101 points).

You will notice that the cards overlap. Also, some big bore pistols may cut across more than one card, pick your 5 best cards. Only the visible portion of the card counts on this target. You can not count a card that appears to have a portion behind another card. [Consider this a special "hard" deck of cards made from Kevlar.]i.e. a direct hit on the #3 only counts as a 3 and can not count as hitting the 9 that is behind it. If, on the other hand, the shot breaks the edge of the card and touches the 3 and the 9 it will be your choice which card counts for scoring.

A FLUSH will be allowed using two of the same card (which is not possible in real life.) However, in the case of a tie a flush with 5 different cards will take priority.

NOTE: This target has cards with different suits ( Hearts and Diamonds) which are needed to properly score FLUSH and ROYAL FLUSH hands. There is no way to get a straight flush other than a ROYAL FLUSH on this target.

Note that the target has smaller areas visible for the ROYAL FLUSH cards. This was not an accident.

This is a fun match to shoot - I enjoyed it the last time we did it. Unfortunately, I'm nursing a broken right shoulder right now :( - so no recoil for me for awhile.

Have fun guys!! :)

Mark - Sorry you won't be able to do the match this time.

Yes, I kinda like this match format. We have done this twice before and others seem to like it as well. I made some changes to it this month. The target is different, partly because the old one does not seem to be available now. I also wanted to make the higher scoring cards smaller (Royal Flush)to add to the difficulty for the really good shooters.

I hope we get more entries this month. Have fun all!

photo-guy - a question on the new (last month) categories for rimfire. Where would a scoped or improved rimfire rifle or pistol fall? Seems like they would just fall into one of the othr categories. But having separate rimfire categories makes me wonder if all rimfires are in them.

Mal H,
I have struggled with the class designations several times. On the one hand, I want to make classes available that 'level the playing field' and provide many options. On the other hand, we just don't have a lot of shooters entering the match and we often end up with a single entry in some classes - not much of a contest there.

For now I think the 'scoped' aspect of the firearm will be the predominant factor and scoped rimfire should be reported under scoped pistol or rifle.

So with this one (with the stock pistol anyway) I tried a strategery which I laughingly refer to as "Luck of the Draw" pun intended. I drew my Smith Mod 10 and fired like fast.....maybe 1 1/2 to 2 seconds per round. I had target aquisition, just no wasting time. I sorta aimed at the six figguring if I was lucky I would end with 5 of a kind.

The missus has my digital loaded up with quilt pictures. I darn't remove any of them.

Distance 10 yds
Hand/Score: 3 sixes and a 9 (one must be up my sleeve) / 70

Your THR ID/NAME Cropcirclewalker

Distance 25 yds
Hand/Score: K, 8, 8, Q (one must be up my sleeve) / 60

Your THR ID/NAME Cropcirclewalker
CLASS Scoped Rifle

Hand/Score: 3, 3, 9, 9, 5 two pair / 65

Your THR ID/NAME: DR
CLASS: Pistol Scoped/Improved (S&W 642 with LG205 laser)
Distance: 11 yards
Hand/Score: Five of a kind (2, 2, 2, 2, 2), 95 points

Your THR ID/NAME: DR
CLASS: Pistol Stock (Kahr K9)
Distance: 11 yards
Hand/Score: Full house (K, K, 2, 2, 2), 85 points

On both of these I was trying for five of a kind. After I sent the target downrange I watched the laser wobble about and decided that a good chance at 95 points beat a poor chance at 100 points. I got a little sloppy with the Kahr and lucked out with a full house.

This is my first time posting here. I love this idea of a virtual match.

I went for the glory here but came up about .5mm short of a Royal Flush.

bdutton - Welcome to the match! Hope you enjoy(ed) it. [If you have other firearms you can try additional entries in other calsses.].

It is always nice when someone new joins in. I have been thinking that, perhaps, it was time to call it quits as the participation level has fallen off yet again. But, we'll see how it goes.

I entered for the first time last month, and I'm planning to try in 3 classes this month. Actually was trying to go to the range after work today and shoot it, but as I came over a hill on 290E, saw the traffic back up for miles and a couple of police driving on the shoulder to get ahead, must have been a big accident. Didn't wanna wait hours for that mess to clear up. I'll try again Sat. or Sun.

I hope we get lots of shooters this month!

Well, I finally got to shoot a match during the month it's active. Being the wonderful guy I am, I'll even post so everyone can feel better. :D

BENCHRESTED
Red Tornado
Class:Rifle Scoped - M-69 w/ BSA Airgun scope :)
Distance:50 yards

Red Tornado
Class:Rifle stock - Ruger 10/22
Distance:50 yards
hand/score: Q,Q,9,9,6 (65 pts)
Note: I actually got 3 fairly solid hits on the empty space between the number I hit, and one of the Q's just barely nicked, but I'm giving myself credit. I needs those 5 points. :D It's legit, see the target.
BTW, can anyone really see this target from 50 yards w/o a scope. I was guessing.

Thanks for putting this all together Photo_guy, it was a lot of fun.

I'd like to shoot my scoped (red-dot) .22 at 50 feet as that is the only reasonable distance for this level of acuracy required. But that is not in the rules (yet).

I have a scoped .45 (also a red-dot) which could be fun to try. Been quite busy so it was easier to set up the target in my basement and use my new air pistol. I have a few rifles as well but pistol is my game.

We have been allowing people to attempt "non-standard" distances for these matches - just be sure you post the actual distance you used. It very well may mean that your score will be summarized "in a class by yourself" since others are unlikely to submit entries under the exact same conditions. But, since this is all for fun anyway, you are free to do that and report the score.

I am open to suggestions for other classes or distances for these matches. If you can drum up support from a few other members for a specific set of conditions I will gladly consider that for next month.

I came all the way back from Florida just to shoot this month's match. ;)

Robert J McElwain
CLASS: Stock Pistol, SIG P 220, .45 ACP
Distance: 10 yards
Hand/Score: One Pair, two tens, Score 60

Robert J McElwain
CLASS: Scoped Pistol, Ruger Mark II .22 Cal, Bushnell Red Dot
Distance: 10 YARDS
Hand/Score: Full House, 3 fives, 2 Aces, Score 85

I might have been better off staying in Florida. At least based on the .45 ACP score. OTOH, any excuse to get to the range is good one. :D

I shot 4 separate classes, and used the same strategy for all 4. My plan was to shoot the Ace, the 10, the King, the Queen and the Jack, in that order. If I pulled a shot, then I'd re-evaluate and determine what my new best possible hand was. As it was, I also pulled at least one shot. My scores were better if I pulled it early, rather than late.

Tim Burke
Class: Airgun Pistol, Beeman P1
Distance: 10 yards
Hand/Score: 5 of a kind (4s) / 95 pts
Note: The pellets didn't punch clean holes, so I've zoomed in to make them visible. There are 2 hits NE of the heart, and 3 in an equilateral triangle near the corner of the 2. 2 of those hits touch the line.

Tim Burke
Class: Stock Pistol, Colt 1911 45 ACP
Distance: 10 yards
Hand/Score: 3 of a kind (9,9,9,A,3)/ 70 pts
Note: I pulled the 10 into the 9, so I went for 4 nines, rather than 4 Aces, because the 9 was a bigger target. Pulled another into the 3.

Tim Burke
Class: Improved Pistol, Colt New Frontier 44 Special, 7.5" barrel
Distance: 10 yards
Hand/Score: Pair (K,K,A,10, miss)/ 60 pts
Note: I jerked the trigger and missed the Queen outright. The best I could do was a pair, so I went for the King for the last shot, since it was a bigger target than the Ace.

Tim Burke
Class: Rimfire Pistol, Kimber 1911, 17Mach2 (Yeah, I know it isn't a 22, but it is a rimfire.)
Distance: 10 yards
Hand/Score: Pair (K,K,A,10, miss)/ 60 pts
Note: I did the exact same thing as in the Improved class.

Oh well, better luck next month.

Great match -- lots of fun!

I'm not real impressed with my abilities here but I had fun anyway and it gave me an excuse to shoot one of my late fathers' rifles.

The missus has my digital camera filled up with pictures of quilts and won't let me erase them.

I yam awful proud. I cast the bullets (Lyman 311291 gas checked 169 gr LRN (a classic)) sized at .309 powered by 13.1 grains of TRAIL BOSS (my own load, disclaimer etc, do not try this at home) clipping along at a screaming 1310 fps.

Clean holes with nothing touching a line. :D

edited..Some might say the hole in the 10 almost touches the line for the 2, but it's questionable.

re edited....not 2, 9

photo_guy,
Any thoughts of extending the competition over the Labor Day weekend? I'll bet there will be lots of range time taken in that period, I know I will be doing some targt shooting and intend to try "my hand" at that time.

I love the poker shoots you offer, but have not been able to get it in this month.

So let it be written.....So let it be done!

Mal H - Yes, I was thinking of doing just that. I have been having 'life' happen to me recently so I haven't gotten to the range to shoot it myself.

so....The deadline for entries into the August match is hereby extended to September 6th,2005. So get out there and give it a try over the Holiday!

I plan to get the September match posted before Friday so you can have a chance to shoot both matches at once if you desire.

My strategy was to go for the gold - try for the Royal Flush in each class. I started with the Ace, since I figured that was the hardest target, and worked my way backwards in the AKQJ10 order. Threw a flyer in Improved Pistol and Rimfire, but managed to not choke on Stock Pistol (actually, that was the one I shot first, so maybe I got overconfident for the other two :) ).
