Throwing knives

Made a pair of 12 1/2 inch, 13 ounce throwers.


While I was at it made a 10 3/4 inch, 12 ounce for a friend.

I yoosta....take my knife and 'hawk throwing pretty seriously.

Here's one I made from a JD mower blade.
It works really well.

Nice work guys. At what temperature do you heat treat the knives? Is it different for every type of metal or is it the same across the board?

Different metals have different quench and tempering profiles. Some are forgiving like 1084 and 1095 which have broad ranges, but the more complex the composition the narrower and more complex heat treat becomes.

With a mower blade you'd want to cycle it and quench at a lower temp for toughness instead of edge retention. Your tempering would be to draw that hardness back to help prevent breakage.

I have a lower back problem that limits my mobility and knife throwing has become difficult. I have, however, kept the knives that I have made in the past.....still throw them when the back allows. Here are two of the bunch. The shiny one is the last one that I have made. The darker one (made two) is my favorite.
