Do I need to get me a tinfoil hat? I look at profiles here, and most are just a black hole. I have most of my personal information on mine, and a link to my msn profile complete with picture.

Is no one else providing information because they fear that "big brother is watching"? Because their neighbors might notice them here? Or because of fear of internet stalkers/thieves? Or is there another reason I have not considered?

I too used to fill out most of the info slots on forums. Now I only do on non-firearm related ones.
A while back,on a different forum,I was shopping for a gun safe.Another forum member pointed out to me that by having all my info(where I live,my full name,& etc.)in my profile I was making myself a potential target for anyone with a larcenous bent.I kinda compromised w/the current level of info.I figure that the black helicopters can find me anyways.

I think most people are just too lazy or simply want anonymity. As for big brother, not filling out your profile will not in any way prevent a government agency from finding out who you really are so that reason's bunk. I completely understand not publishing one's address for various reasons, but the other stuff is usually relatively harmless.

You can look my stuff up in a phone book. I don't like to put my e-mail address or AIM account on forums, because of the inevitable spam. Any PM will get more info about me than you thought possible. Or just visit my crazy webpage! ;)

A moderate ammount of paranoia. Anyone who wants to contact me can do so with the PM or email features of THR.

Wave to the nice FBI man.

Frankly I find those who put almost no information in their profile are slightly less trustworthy then those who are honest about who they are (although some have proven themselves otherwise).

The only reason I use a nickname here is because on the internet I'm better known as Zundfolge then as Mike.

Also I think most who put almost no information in their profile just don't understand how the internet works.

You log onto this site you give out your IP address ... if "they" want to, "they" can find you by that alone.

I'm a freedom fighter from a different space-time continuum, and leaving off my personal data makes it harder for the Temporal Magistrate to locate me. The internet ether does transcend you humans’ lowly four dimensional space-time, after all.

My lack of information is neither of your suggestions.

It stems from my days on the radio when a host from another time slot was attacked outside his home by a nut who didn't like what he was saying during his show.
He used his real name and the attacker looked up his address on the county tax roles as his name was unlisted in the phone book.

I always used an alias to protect my family from nut jobs who have too much time on their hands.
The other reason was the show was strong on 2nd amendment rights and gun type and brand discussions.
I did not want anyone tracking down where I lived and break into the house while gone to steal guns.

The same goes for here. We all, or most profess to own guns and even post some pictures. If someone wanted, it would be real easy to find out where you live for the same purpose.
Remember, you can't defend your property if you ain't home.

Some need to brag on what they own and give out much personal information. Others like me like privacy.

Prudent, yes. Tin foil, no.

Governments already have all my info and prints. A few corporations have all my info. My bank has all my info. Even so, no sense in making it easy for them, others or all the creepy-crawly things on the net to find my info and make useful connections for themselves to me. If I want to do business with some other business or corporation I will go to them and we will discuss the idea of them fulfilling my interests. What I look at, what I purchase, what I sell, what I copy to file is just no one's business but my own. If that is seen as paranoid or judged to be shady in some way, so be it. That's your problem, not mine. I keep to myself as I see fit and I would appreciate others doing the same.

I've met others from THR/TFL face to face or have done business with them through the mails. Everyone involved did exactly what they agreed to do, including myself. I ask for no more and expect no less. If members of this board and other boards where I am a member find that they need to reach me for some reason they can do so through the PM systems provided on those boards. (That assumes that I remember to check for PMs upon my visiting.) Depending on shared interests or willingness and ability to meet needs I will share whatever level of personal info I feel comfortable with as being appropriate to the situation.

And no. You won't find me in any phone book, neither can you get my number or address from information. Keep your spam, your junk mail, your charitable requests, your credit offers, your sales offers and announcements. I don't want them. I don't need them and I've done pretty well without them. I try not to intrude on or intervene the lives of others, I am not a government. I would also appreciate a reciprocal consideration.

i go to alot of forums and usually the most i fill out is my location and birthdate. i didnt really think peopled looked at those profiles so i never bothered putting more. plus after ive gone through the hassle of registering on a forum im not in the mood to fill in anymore blanks.

If anyone can't figure out who I am, they're not really paying attention.

I used to post under an alias, and there is still one place left that I do, but for the most part, I just don't care anymore. I use my real name when I meet strangers all the time, and I finally realized the big old internet isn't much different.

Go Google yourself!!

I've found postings I've made from the early '90s, when there was no World Wide Web, and the hot Internet services were Lynx and Gopher. Everything I've ever put on a forum is recorded and stored, somewhere, and I am not terribly comfortable that. There's already too much info about me to allow me to run for President ("No, they weren't my medals, but they were my ribbons...").

By the way, what kind of mother names her child "ksnecktieman"? :D

Point made?

If the ".gov" really wants to know who i am they could do it without the need of a user name or profile information. Since I realize that i as a taxpayer would ultimately have to foot the bill for such a process i figured that i would save myself some money and make it easy for them.

I personally think it is a mistake to print personal info simply because of the cases of "psycho" posters I have seen online. A couple were "allegedly" gunsmiths who would jump into any thread and challenge the ability of any human to work on his own gun.... then went explosive when somebody would point out that a lot of private shooters were skilled at gunsmithing.

The Iraq war thing has really set off some firestorm threads. On the 1911 forum, two of the moderators backed up by a pack of thugs would go after anybody who posted information that showed the stated causes for war (WMD's, Iraq's alleged support of Al Qaeda, etc) were not true. In the months after the war, all of that information has now reached mainstream press, but at the time it caused violent personal attacks... actually, it still does come to think of it.....

I don't think people are afraid of big brother, I think they are afraid of frustrated rambo-wannabee psycho showing up at their house.

The fed.gov doesn't need me to put my info in the profile to figure out who I am.

But a smart criminal could use my real name and other info to find out my address (know anything about skip tracing?), and I don't like saying "Hey criminals, come steal my guns!!!!"

I don't give out personal information over the phone, either. No reason to make thing overly easy.

My online name began as a way to mock Quake players, with names such as "evil_avatar" and the like.

Like many others have already said, I'm not really concerned with the government. I'm sure they have all the info they feel they need on me, and can easily gather anything else they want.

It's others I'm concerned about. A few years back I had a question for Dennis on TFL (by the way, is Dennis still around?), so I e-mailed him. In his reply he asked if I was the same so-and-so that lived in such-and-such city, was born on such-and-such date, had posted to such-and-such websites, had this, did that, etc. All this info he had gathered through a basic web search. Though he never said it outright, I believe he was trying to give me the hint that I should exercise a bit of prudency when online. Because really, I had never given a second thought to anything like that. I was fairly new to the internet, and had no idea that what I would put out there basically stayed there, and was accessible via simple searches, as I verified myself shortly thereafter by doing my own searches. I was really taken aback, and in hindsight I'm grateful to Dennis for showing me just how much about myself I was making freely available to the entire world. My online habits changed almost immediately. Add to that all the reading I've done on identity theft since then, and the many examples of criminal misuse of basic information gathered online and elsewhere, and you get the picture. Being cautious with what I put online is a free and simple step to help minimize the risk to my safety and well-being, similar to locking the doors on my car and house, wearing my sealbelt, tucking my clothes in when working around machinery and power tools, etc. Why open myself or my family up to unnecessary risk?

Are you picking on tinfoil hats? I've been wearing mine for years and it seems to work just fine.

I don't know about everyone else but I find that roof flashing works much better than plain, old, thin tinfoil. Besides, it comes in colors now so I can be stylish and protected!:D
