First, it never hurts to ask. When you approach a knifemaker or dealer’s table, do not assume that you are allowed to just go up to the table and just pick up the knives for a closer look. Always ask the maker/dealer first before you even pick up the first one. “May I handle a few of your knives?”; “may I see this knife?” or something of that variety, and you would have broken ice right there with that question. Every time I have asked this question the answer ALWAYS has been affirmative. In fact, makers and dealers encourage you to do so. Even if you know the answer will be yes, ALWAYS ask first. It only just takes a few seconds. ...

I break the ice by complimenting their leatherwork of the sheaths.

I’m not much of a knife guy. I like them and use them but I am not an enthusiast.

I like leatherwork though so I really enjoy the knife maker booths.

Always ask first, at any type of "show".

Also, if you see something truly unique, and you want to take a picture to show a buddy, to save an idea for a commissioned piece, or just because you think something is cool, ask before taking a picture also.

It should go without saying that you don't pick items up without asking. This is basic etiquette at gun shows.

LOL

I would venture a guess you have never worked a gunshow.

It would amaze you how many people seemingly assume that if its on display they can pick it up and mesd with it without so much as a hello

Good advice
My variation is " what beautiful work! Can I see it. "
That is always a great intro.

And if you ask good questions about the steel used, or technical questions about the maker's process, stay humble and don't pretend you know more than you do, you might end up getting a better price should you decide to buy ...

BTW, I love Spartan blades. I bought one of the Harsey Defensas and was gonna keep it for myself, but gave it to my baby brother as a gift when he got his PhD.
