It's a lazy day in western Kentucky and the wife is sick so I get to have me time.

Today's objective is to load 500 45 acp 200 grain powder coated swc bullets over 5 grains of Bullseye.

I will be using my ancient dillon 450 with a CH push pull powder measure.

Those primer prices in the picture 20231216_155817.jpg 20231216_155829.jpg are just too high lol

I have several sleeves of those primers. I started reloading in 1996 and the primers were bought shortly after. Been years since I loaded any. Used some recently experimenting in 308 with cast bullets. All fired with no problems.

I bought a brick when I started reloading about five years ago, $26 IIRC, and thought I would never get through all of them. Looking back I wish I had bought every one they had.

I've been through several ammo shortages, but this was my first component shortage. I got caught short, then I got caught up, and I won't get caught short again.

Some of us have been thru a few shortages. You learn quickly that you never have enough, even if you only shoot several thousand a year.

I got some from that era too. Mine are 550's though.
Old CCI primers.jpg $1.59 a sleeve. That will never happen again.

Found some old Winchesters too. But they were more expensive.
Old Win primers.jpg they were a $1.99 a sleeve.

Then I have some of these really old CCI's.
"Made by the GOOD Ol' BOYS" Old, really old, CCI primers.jpg Love that old packaging

Those "Good ol' Boys" would roll over in their graves if they could see what is going on now with the company they built. Owned by some dude in Czechoslovakia. :fire:

I bought a bunch of these and some other goodies for pennies at a yard sale a couple years ago. A couple years before that I was paying 30 bucks a thousand and was glad to find them. Now it’s 85 or so and I keep hoping it will get better but…who knows.

Where can I find one of those presses? Sealed. Looks like a good press.

The easier way to find one is through a want to buy add on the various gun forums and wait.

The easiest way is ebay.

My 450 has the star hand wheel, the modified base for a case ejector, and a 550 primer system upgrade.

As I stated earlier in the year in a thread about Dillon customer service and my two Dillon measures I will not be a customer of Dillon in the future ever again. That is why I have a push pull CH powder measure, I enjoy this style powder measure after using it a while.

With the right dies and seating stems I am able to hold O.A.L to within .002 of a inch.
For a machine never designed for this I find that impressive. I feel this is due to the fixed head increasing the rigidiness.

If your looking for quick change overs this is not the machine for you. I usually leave this set up for 308

In 2007 or 2008, Cabelas had the S&B primer for $19.99/1000. They were that cheap for over a year before the prices went up. Sadly I only bought 5000 large rifle and 5000 small pistols primers at those prices.
I remember seeing those advertised starting around the late nineties. I don’t recall exactly when but it was post internet and pre Y2K. Anyway, I was advised by more knowledgeable people to stear clear of the Euro primers - metric! :( - so I did. Now I know they just seat a little harder and are otherwise pretty good.
Live and learn.

I still have and use some of the LRPs but for awhile I was shooting 1000s of 40s&w a week so its been many years since Ive had any of the pistol primers left.

Yeah, I eventually got cheap and took a chance on some Wolf LRP. Turned out to be a smart decision. They’re pretty darn good for anything in a .30-06 case. I bought all I could find at $15.50/K. I still have two bricks.
The Fiocchi are (imo) the best of the European pistol primers. But they are all pretty good. Just maybe a little quirky.

I bought some on a "black Friday" sale and got a rebate, I don't remember the price. I've bought banana boxes of primers at auctions for less than 1k go for now, usually around $50.

I hadn't had to buy anything since 07ish except some bullets. Id bought cfe223 at pretty low prices and some ar comp for 20 ish just to try at some point. The most id paid for primers was 3.99 a pack for Winchester and the highest powder I found a price on was 28.99 in my reloading room.

I paid 59 dollars (each) for 2 lb of h1000 the other day. And that didn't really make me so mad but They had the same primers for 20.00 a pack..... I didn't need any. Same store I always go to. Great reloading section but things like that make me not care if I support them or not and ive been supporting them for years when online was actually cheaper and in stock. 20 dollars a pack for WLRM..... lol. I may just order from now on if I ever need anything. Also took the guy a full 5 minutes to give me change for my 120 dollars cash. Just couldn't do the math. Lol.

And no he wasn't a young guy either. He was 50s btw. Lol

In order to make your “me time” less expensive, load on a single stage press instead of a progressive. It will reduce the number of primers you use per hour. 🤓
