To open the door - Or NOT to open the door - that is the question

Would you open the door if a stranger knocked on your door?

I think everyone should watch the evening news, COPS, and check their local PDs most wanted site. After awhile, they will recognize what criminals in their community look like. Part of being streetwise is recognizing potential trouble ahead of time.

I have noticed a pattern in Atlanta where burglars knock on the door to check if someone is home. If they think that the house is unoccupied, they proceed to commit a burglary. So, you have to respond to the knock in some way. We live in an apartment complex with a generally very good safety rating. To get to our specific door a criminal has to get through a gate and pass by lots of witnesses and lots of more convenient targets. The door is steel and I only open it a foot. I believe that I can slam it faster than a criminal can rush it. Nobody EVER gets into the house because it's usually a mess and my wife would be appalled to have guests.

Understood. I just don't understand the need to open the door - unless they can't hear you talking through it. In which case you could get a simple intercom system.
