Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

My father and I share three cellular cameras. He gets a kick out of seeing the wildlife on our property. He asked me to buy a fourth camera for a woods he owns a few miles away. Yesterday was set-up day for camera 4.

My favorite single sling daypack for said camera and binos. I carry a 'hawk or machete to clear out sprouts and weeds from in front of the camera. Today a had my 'hawk. The hsnu little Morakniv fits perfectly in the Molle webbing. It stays there permanently.

As i worked on my camera site i heard brush popping over my shoulder getting nearer. I qas hoping that a black bear was charging me and i would defend my very life with my 'hawk and trusty s&w model 10 that was strapped on my hip! ...!
Alas. It was only the neighbor's dog.

He didn't want to eat me. He just wanted a pat.

With the camera in place,

I went on a little walkabout. I had headed the timber sale on this property 15 years ago. It looks to me like several trees are mature and ready for another sale. 20240224_152943.jpg 20240224_152930.jpg
Here is am example of what happens to mature timber that you don't sell.....it falls and ruins more timber.

20240224_152806.jpg

I set my camera's timer to capture me in a selfie with this giant root wad. (Apparently 5seconds isn't enough for me!)
I will be monitoring the price of timber as there are easily 50 or 60 marketable White Oaks on the property. I hate to do it because it is unsightly for the woods but..... the deer like it better. Mushrooms are more abundant. Small game hide and nest in the undergrowth....it is a good thing.

I chose to carry my sling pack, binos and truck gun kit. (Parkerized model 10 heavy barrel .38spl, Bianchi 5 holster. Bianchi double speedloader pouch.) 20240224_145744.jpg
I even dug around in my pack and found a pkg of Oreo's left from #1 grandson joining me for deer season.

They were a little O-L-D....but hey! ...they're still Oreos!

Was at my mothers house in eastern Washington for past almost 3 weeks. As is my routine I stopped in a pawn shop a couple of towns over that has a HUGE inventory of guns. Walked around a bit and ended up buying two Cold Steel axes for both sons-in-law. Carried one with me while walking our dogs each day in a very large, wooded area about 1.5 miles from house. Area is known to have wolf trafficking through it. Saw some huge tracks in the snow but no actual sightings. Did see lots of elk and deer.

CCW was .40 cal Berretta PX4-STORM sub-compact.

Great way to spend part of a day.

Yesterday I chose to carry.....
bw5.jpg
My big Mexican knife, Indian bow and arrows, and the .54 caliber Plains-Pistol. Ammos load out was eight arrows tipped with needle point Long Bodkins, and six paper cartridges for the pistol. I also had five ball and patch, but forgot to throw the pistol horn in the pack. !!! Do'h. But I survived. It was only on the State Land again, but I like to pack/prepare the same as if I was up North, just to stay in the habit.
bgw.jpg
Took some pics of some of the rock formations out there. Result of the Missoula floods washing the top soil off the basalt bed rock.
bw6.jpg
bw.jpg2.jpg
Cute little cave, but no varmints in it.
bw8.jpg
Didn't have a fire, spent more time wandering and looking into places I usually pass by. So I took my 1.5 cup thermos of coffee, and had Sprats and crackers for lunch.
bw9.jpg
The water was super high in all the temporary ponds. This is a very cool spot, but usually dry. I sat here and finished off a Max Brand book at the end of the day. It's kind of a spooky place, which the photo does not convey. Also made some repairs to my favorite turkey blind. Turkey season coming up! The Plains Pistol, the "Little Beast", the Mexican knife, and the Osage Indian bow say: "thanks for listening".

I haven't posted here in my favorite thread for a while, so I'll get caught up a bit.
Mrs Farmer and I, along with our good friends(my old quail hunting/ crappie fishing buddy), traveled by pickup to Gruene, TX where we heard lots of great live country music at Gruene hall and Luchenbach.
. 20240311_192031.jpg
After a few days there we traveled east to the Texas gulf coast near Freeport and drove up the coastal Beach to Galveston

...
and took the ferry across the bay and drove to New Orleans, LA to visit the ww2 museum there.

What a solemn and informative day of history and a brutal reminder of the price of our freedom that was paid in full by so many.
We then toured the French Quarter. It is full of history and architecture. This statue Is Col Jackson in Jackson Square with the beautiful St. Louis cathedral in the background.

Some of the French/ Spanish influences 20240314_121025.jpg
There we are still a few Mardi Gras beads dangling from the trees and electrical wires on and around bourbon Street.
Here are some rifles decorating the rafters of O'Reilly pub. 20240313_204354.jpg
We had a great week of vacation and had some great food.

I carried my Hellcat
and mrs had her LCP.

What a nice trip!

Beautiful Gulf Fritillarys and Tawny Skipper, @Mars5l !
Swamped with work, it’s been a while since I’ve been out and about. I have got to make it down to Frederick Meijer Gradens for the butterfly exhibit!
Spring is sprung! The Peepers are out! And I’m feeling froggy!
It’s snowing at the moment, but the trails are open!😁

We’ve had some fun picture threads lately that have remained mercifully free of bickering or controversy. Let’s keep the good vibes rolling.

I’m hoping this will become a long running thread capturing pictures of some of our favorite outdoor load outs.

Every post must include a mention and/or picture of the gun you carried in the great outdoors that particular outing. This isn’t a general non-firearm gear thread as that’s outside the scope of THR. But if other gear is in the pictures, no problem. BUT THERE HAS TO BE A GUN, or we’ll get shut down. Also, let’s not debate or disparage anyone’s choices. This isn’t the thread to debate the effectiveness of bear spray.

Tell us what you carried, your ammo choice if you like, and maybe the purpose of the outing and load out choice.

I was off work today and had some time to go out for a nice hike. I took my time and enjoyed it. I saw some deer a smooth green snake, a marmot, and all kinds of birds. Weather was great.

Mountain lions are the biggest predator here so I carried a Sig Sauer P220 chambered in 10mm auto. It was loaded with Underwood Ammo 140 gr Extreme Penetrators. The bullets are made by Lehigh but the cartridges are loaded by Underwood.

Normally I am trucking along but I was under a doctor’s orders to keep my heart rate low. So I had time for a few pictures in the woods.

I also carried a WE Knife Co. Chimera knife. It’s a 3.9” S35VN bladed flipper knife. Very handy and very comfortable to use.

And finally I also was using a 48” Rowan Tree walking stick. Rowan is also known as mountain ash. It was made by a man in Ireland and makes for a nice hiking stick.

All in all it was a very peaceful time. I saw no one and just listened to some relaxing music on a single ear bud. Couldn’t have been much better.

So what did you carry into the outdoors today?

That's simply beautiful.

I'm actually still enjoying the outdoors as I type this.
What started as a mushroom hunt has turned into a wildflower picking/ river viewing pleasure hike.....(no mushrooms:thumbdown:)
It's been rainy this week so all farming operations are on hold(except shop work, blah).
It became evident that the morels are still stalling here. I walked through so.e of my favorite patches with no success at all.
The bluebells are in bloom ... 20240405_162110.jpg

which usually coincide with mushroom season, but it's still early.
I collected (shamelessly) a handful for Mrs F to decorate with. 20240405_155652.jpg
These are known here as Dutchman britches. (No offense intended to any Dutchmen here).
20240405_163016.jpg
I get extra points if I bring flowers home. I need points.
This guy came in close to check me out. 20240405_171451.jpg
He was about 10ft above my head.
The recent rains swelled our little river to its very brim....but has gone down quite a bit now. 20240405_165930.jpg
My dad was struggling to shoot his 22 pistol with his arthritis and age. He thought a lightweight revolver was what he wanted, so he bought a Ruger super Wrangler yesterday. I'm not sure he can run it either....but he wanted it sooooo....

I had bought the nice little Triple K holster for him about 10yrs ago as a gift.
I dropped his new Wrangler off to him and he said "you take that holster home with you, and just leave that pistol in it. It fits too good to separate them". (His way of giving it to me)
20240405_165655.jpg of course, I obliged to do as I was told!
20240405_165349.jpg
So, of course, this is what I chose to carry on my hike today.
20240405_171831.jpg
Thanks dad!
