This afternoon my wife and I were sitting in our yard with our two dogs. One is a border collie -lab mix and the other is a chihuahua mix. Both were on leads and lying down at our feet. I did not have a firearm on at the time. We live on a private road with our house sitting a 1/4 mile in from the main road. Another 1/2 mile back is an aircraft maintenance shop that is only open during the week. There is no activity there on the weekend
All of a sudden my wife yells Hey. I turned around and saw 2 older men walking up the road with a shepherd mix dog that was unleashed. Their dog made a beeline for our little dog but our bigger dog got there first and bowled it over. The dogs were starting to circle. My wife grabbed the little dog and ran in the house. I yelled at the two men to get their dog and get out of here as this was a private road.
At that point my dog had his nose right at their dog's throat and i had a knife drawn and open. The one guy quickly grabbed his dog and apologized. The other one started getting mouthy and said that he was a friend of the man that owns the maintenance place in the back. He said that he could walk on the road at any time that he wanted and was not about to go anywhere.
At that point my daughter and son in law came out. My daughter simply asked" Dad. Shotgun or Magnum ?' My reply was to call 911 which she did. The two guys left with their dog then. The police did not show up for another 10 minutes - they were totally gone then.
In one way, I was glad that I did not have a gun on my person as I would probably have shot their dog as soon as it crossed the property line. Since the land is all on a rock ledge, there could have been a richocet that hist a person. My dog and I could have done some damage on the two guys with little trouble if need be.
However, I do not think all intruders would have been two late middle aged guys that are very...well you can probably guess....I will probably have to start carrying even around the house. It really seems a shame to have really private property and still have trespassers.
