1 -Colt SAA 1873 Peacemaker - I know people who still carry these, hunt, shoot, collect. An archetypal firearm if there is one.
2 - Colt M1911A1 - over 100 years, dozens of copycats, not going anywhere soon.
3 - S&W Model 10, 19, 36 (nearly equal). From ankle, to pocket, to hip.
4 - S&W Model 29 - Was that 5 shots or 6? Do you feel lucky? A serious game-changer.
5 - Luger P08 - but no one carries these anymore do they.
6 - HK P7M8 (thumb, not bottom, mag release), flat, compact, accurate.
7 - Glock 17 (with light trigger mod) Classic.
8 - SIG - several come to mind, but I'll pick 226 in 9mm for CQB Alex for $500
9 - Makarov 9x18 - various styles. Cold war symbol of state power now $250 for C&R holders... ammo purchased separately.
10 - Well, that's 11, but what the heck.

Chosen for utility, world-wide distribution and market penetration, reliability, longevity.

I still shoot my grandfather's 1911 from WW1. Mfd in 1913 it's still pristine, blue, reliable as anything else in my collection. When I carry, it's usually a 1911 variant, but I'm also fond of the HK P7M8 since I first learned about it while learning to shoot from a CIA spook some years back. I have a couple of first gen. Colt SAAs that will be working long after I'm no longer able to. Walther PP came to mind, but it's really more of a niche market. Very nicely tooled, finished, I've owned a half dozen of them, never got close to any of them.

YMMV.

In no particular order

1. 1911 of some sort,
Mine is a S&W 1911 with the usual bling features but I'd be happy
with a Colt Goverment MOdel Series 70
2. S&W K-Frame - S&W has sold more of the K-frames since the '1st'
one, which became the K-frame, 198 1st Model Hand ejector 1898
Mine is a 617 .22 LR 10 shot - my first handgun circa mid'60s Model
18 K-22 Combat Masterpiece 4" bbl.
3. S&W N-frame in .45 ACP ( .45 Auto Rim ) S&W has been making
various models since the M1917 continuously except during WWII
and they complement the 1911
Mine's a S&W 625 5" Bbl.
4. Luger P-08 - it's just a sexy one....
5. CZ 75B - first of the Super 9s of the and yah need
at least one, DA/SA
6. Colt Single Action Army ..45 Colt
7. Ruger Blackhawk Convertible .45 Colt / .45 ACP
8. S&W 27-2 .357 Mag 5" Bbl.
8. S&W 610 5" Bbl .10mm AUto/.40 S&W
9. S&W J-frame
Mine is the Model 60 Chiefs Speccial 3" Bbl. .357 Mag adj. Rear sight
10. S&W M&P 40C .40 S&W

I LIKE RUGERS :D

Some of these are on the list because of how fun they are to shoot, others are on there because of how well-built and beautiful they are. I actually think about this list every now and then and try to consolidate everything into one, all-encompassing, 'Top 10'. The order of ranking may change now and then but the guns that appear on the list don't. You can probably tell that I'm a big fan/supporter of Dan Wesson.
1. Dan Wesson Razorback 10mm
...and then everything else is a few ranks below that. The RZ-10 is the greatest handgun ever built IMHO.
3. S&W Model 629
4. Browning High Power
5. Dan Wesson VBOB (great carry gun)
6. Gen4 G17/G19 (Caliber doesn't matter. It fits my hand so well and is a BLAST to shoot)
7. Any Monson-era Dan Wesson .357 Revolver
8. Coonan Classic (1911-inspired .357 autoloader, expertly designed)
9. SIG P210
10. Ruger LCP (my EDC)

Top Ten as far as range time

Beretta 92FS Inox
Glock 21SF
Glock 30
Ruger Bisley 44 Special Flat Top
Ruger MKII Government Model Stainless
S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman
S&W Model 629 44 6 inch
S&W K22 5 screw made in 1948
S&W Model 21 44 Special nickel
Sig 220 ST

Wish I had

Baer 1911
Colt SAA from the early period up to about 1900 or so
Colt Detective Special 1st model NIB
Luger of some sort
S&W Registered Magnum...probably would never shoot it though
S&W 27 with 3 1/2 barrel in pristine condition
S&W Triple Lock 44 Special
Sig P210

Thats 8 on the wish list

Have:
1. Colt 1911 - classic
2. S&W K-frame (Model 65) - I like having the option of .357
3. Browning Buckmark - can't forget a .22
4. S&W Model 17 - maybe the prettiest gun I've seen in person

Working on:
1. USGI 1911 - just for the history
2. Colt SAA in .45LC - classic. Might go .357 to share ammo with the other revolvers
3. S&W Model 27-2 5" bbl - I think this would be the perfect all around .357. Now to find one...
4. Les Baer TRS 1.5" - because I want a semi-custom 1911
5. Freedom Arms Model 83 - because I want an absolute hand cannon. Ruger SBH might be good too
6. Another Colt 1911 (maybe commander sized) - if 1 is good, 2 is better. Right? :D

I've been following this thread off and on for awhile now. My reaction almost every time I see it is, "What an impossible question!"

Best at what? Where?

Here's the best I can figure...

Best for learning to shoot a handgun: Ruger MkII Gov't Target. Runner Up: DA revolver of some sort.
Best for annoying everyone around you at a public range: S&W 460es snubby. Runner up: Ruger Old Army with smokey powder.
Best for making public safety videos: Glock 22. No competition.
Best for making you look like a wanker: Desert Eagle, gold plated. Runner up: AR pistol
Best gun for reminding yourself shooting isn't about accessorizing or following trends: S&W m10. Runner up: SP101?
Best gun for accessorizing and showing that you are part of the tribe: 1911. Runner up: Glock 17.
Best gun for hunting: Ruger Super Blackhawk. Runner up: Freedom Arms whatever they call it.
Best gun for Concealed Carry: Kel-tec P3AT or clone. Runner up: J-frame.
Best gun for open Carry: S&W m29. Runner up: Ruger Alaskan.
Best gun for just looking like it would hurt to be around: T/C Encore pistol in 7mm magnum. Runner up: Same sort of deal with the bolt action "pistols".

Seems like i'm missing some.... Best gun for using as a basis for sci-fi props: Mauser c96. Best gun for causing arguments on the internet: Taurus Judge. Best gun for using when the chips are down: the one you are best with....

:)

Well, the OP never even used the word "best". He just asked "What are your top ten guns? Ones you own or would like to own."

Doesn't really change the problem. "Top ten" is the same as "best ten" as far as I can tell. As for 10 I'd like to own, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like to own (only) ten handguns. ;)

Then again, I'm interested in the history as well as the functionality of these things. On the history side 10 is barely sample of one era.

Ones I own or have owned;

1) BHP 9mm Hard Chromed
2) SW1911 (fixed sights)
3) Sig P220 NS
4) H&K USP 40
5) Sig P228
6) Glock 17 Gen3
7) Glock 22 Gen4
8) Sig P225
9) Springfield Loaded 1911 in 9mm
10) S&W Model 27 Revolver

Based on what I own or have shot enough to talk about, and not in rank order...

CZ-75B / CZ-75B-SA
Browning Buckmark
Magnum Research / IWI Baby Eagle (aka Jericho)
S&W J-frame .38Spl
Ruger Redhawk .44Mag
Ruger Security Six
Browning BDA / Beretta 84
Sig P238
Beretta M9 / 92FS
Glock 22 (or any other duty-size Glock)

Actually, there only two of those I don't own. My list is fluid, as I'm pretty sure all ours are. A lot of famously great handguns don't make my list simply because I don't have enough experience with them to judge.

7. Kriss Vector Pistol
8. Berretta 92FS
9. S&W 44mag (not sure of the model)
