I was at the gun show last weekend and had my Five-seveN and all my ammo as bait mainly but also to see if I could do any trades or anything. So long story short I got a beautiful (2006 date code, so pre Remington!) Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70 that if I didn't know any better, I'd say it's never been shot lol. The barrel looks brand new and the bolt wasn't covered in brass shavings and junk. The action is very tactile and stiff. There is a small amount of scuffs on the stock but otherwise it's in very good condition. The guy I traded with also included 5rds of Remington 405gr SP ammo and 40rds of Armscor 300gr JHP ammo. The scope is an old school Simmons Pro 50 2.5-10x50. I removed it the second we got back to the house after the show Sunday night. Ok not the second we got home, here's what's wierd, the screws for the mount were half stripped and tight as hecking heck! So I had to run to Lowes 10mins before they closed and get a screw extractor and drill them out and got them out. I don't know why they were so tight when there was not any loctite or anything on the threads. But needless to say I will be ordering a picatinny rail for it and putting a red dot on it because I like having an orbital socket lol. Now I have a lever action rifle to go with my Pietta SAA 45 Colt and Kirkpatrick Leather rig.
P.S. I looked up Marlin 1895s on GunBroker and I saw one for $1858 buy it now and that's including shipping, credit card fee, and sales tax. And 45rds of 45-70 is about 3-4 bucks a round lol so that's about $150ish before shipping. So I think I did ok as far as trades go. Now to see if I can trade up to a Noreen BN36X3 in 30-06 next ,lol. Like a gun nut version of bigger and better.
P.P.S. 45-70 Government is the only government I trust.;)

You scored BIG TIME! A good trade for a fine rifle. No go hunt some grizzlies!
Thanks! So you agree with the overall value being about right? I had 600ish rounds of 5.7 ammo so that's not cheap lol. And yeah I was thinking about testing my 458 Socom AR vs this thing and see how much difference there is between them.

I've kinda always wanted to give the Five-seveN a try, but if I had one I'd trade for that...
Yeah I was like this thing is mint and it's pre Remington so I was like would you be open to horse trading and he was like maybe what do you have and came and looked at my five seven and stuff I had with it. Then he was like, ehh I don't really know much about that gun so I'm a bit hesitant to just straight trade, but then he came back about 30 minutes later and was like, I'll do it.

My recollection of prices suggests that, monetarily, the other guy got the better end of the deal by a good amount.

I'd value the marlin at about $800, nothing for the scope, and about $75 for the ammo.
An $1895 buy it now on an auction site is a fishing trip for suckerfish, not a reasonable value

The 5.7 I value at about $1k, and the ammo at about $400.

Now, I would rather have had the marlin too, but I think you took a pretty heavy loss in a straight across trade.

Huh, ok. I do know that NIB Ruger made Marlins seem to be going for stupid money (again, GunBroker pricing lol) so I figure its better than shelling out the 2k cash (GunBroker pricing) for a new Ruger Marlin 1895...

I am a die-hard anti-fan of Simmons scopes. In my experience you get what you pay for and Simmons scopes haves always shown me that they should belong to someone else.
I have a 44Mag of about the same vintage on my CZ 457 Pro Varmint as its the only scope I have that's got a small enough objective lens to fit on the Leupold "high" (they are more of a low/medium in my mind) rings that I have on it. I do want a better scope though as the eye box is garbage lol... but the view out the scope isn't that bad honestly. they are budget optics for sure, don't get me wrong lol. P.S. I know putting a Simmons on Leupold rings and a CZ rifle is like putting Walmart tires on a Ferrari lol.

I would generally agree with you. In the distant past some of the Japan made Simmons custom shop target and gold medal handgun scopes were some of the finest scopes you could buy for your money, but those days are long behind us. It’s a shame what Simmons and Tasco and Bushnell have become. I have a Simmons 6.5-20x40 that would be one of my favorite scopes I’ve ever owned if only it had target turrets.

Simmons, I just attach them to my custom 1903 30-06, fire it one time and it is executed right then, every time.
The Marlin, I had one for about 10 years up until about 3 weeks ago when it began doing light strikes from
a previous trigger job Sent it to get fixed, less than 30 minutes later I had an offer for $1,000 and I took it.
I have another 45/70 anyhow.
Kinda miss the rifle, but not the reloading.

Hmm the trigger on this Marlin is scary good. It's like a single stage AR trigger almost. Pretty clean break and about a 4lb break according to my trigger scale.

I’d rather have a .45-70 Marlin than a 5.7 pistol any day of the week. More fun to shoot, easier to load for, and more useful in the real world too. I feel like monetarily it’s about equal, but it’s a trade I’d have made in a heartbeat too. It’s a lot harder to find a nice Marlin guide gun than an FN Five Seven. And the ammo for both is equally painful to buy… except 45-70 can be loaded quite economically.

Id have to agree that the other guy got more value. If you want a 45-70 then you got what you want. That's all that should matter. Competed auctions on gunbroker show 905-1200 for a jm marked 45-70 blued gun. 950-1100 for the five seven. But then 600 rounds of the cheaper American eagle would go for 400 on a bad day. Fn ammo would go even higher. Closer to a dollar a round.

20 years down the road they still won't be making jm marlins. They may well be making five seven so maybe the value changes.

Enjoy the rifle.

A lot of gun guys dont mind taking a loss on a trade they want -- at least judging by all those I have traded with.

Just kidding. I'm willing to lose some for the right gun too.

I’ve no kidding recently seen stainless guide guns on websites with $3200 being asked. Not sure if they were the new Ruger owned Marlins or previous vintages. Now, if the sellers were getting that or not I don’t know. I do know that I see blued versions locally with the JM barrel stamp in the $1400-1600 range quite routinely and they may be getting close to that asking price.
