Has anyone actually seen one? Handled or shot one? Apparently announced almost 8 months ago, but no one has them in stock. Can't even find one on the traditions web site. It is in the printed brochure as new for 2010.

The last few TC Scout pistols that sold on the webauctions have brought over $330. I figured the mail order houses would have the Vortek pistol new for that or less. Encores seem over priced. I have several pistols in my collection, but no large bore in-line type.

That's pretty common for new products to be advertised long before they go into production and to even photograph a pre-production prototype for the catalog and sales brochure.
Look at the U.S. Firearms reproduction 1858 Remington that never went into regular production after being announced at the Shot Show and on their website.
I also recall that it took a very long time for the Goex Clear Shot powder to become available after their initial announcement of it through a national magazine advertising campaign. And then there were subsequent production problems that delayed it from reaching the market.
The manfacturers try to build up a demand for a new product in advance so that some retailers will order them and not wait for potential customers to come in and need to special order one.
The new Traditions Vortek pistol will probably be available before too long, especially since it's based on the Vortek rifle action which is currently being produced. :)

Talked to a rep. from traditions today. Vortek pistol is not in stock yet. He said they should be avalible at the end of June.

I have one with the 13 inch barrel and the stainless cerakote finish with the walnut grips. Good looking gun, I plan to load it up with hefty loads of 777 and 300 gr sabots for hog hunting. Should do real well.

Vortek pistol has anyone done some load testing with dif bullet weights ? velocity etc ..........thx John

Since I posted the original start of this thread, I picked up a TC Scout and a Tradition's Buck hunter, both 50 cal pistols. I may still be interested in a Vortek, but will have to work on loads for the above pistols first.

I too own a Traditions Vortek P-1521 pistol.

What would you consider a hefty load for this pistol.

I'm a newbee to muzzeloading.
I sighted it in at 25 yards with two inch bulls about every time.
Now I'm ready to hunt deer in Michigan late doe season.

This is the short version.
I used 1 pellet of triple 7 magnum and a 44 Hornady sabot.
I shot a doe at 23 yards out of my bow stand.
The deer was quartering away. The deer ran away and I thought I missed.
Good thing we had snow. I found the deer about 300 yard away. I was a double lung shot the bullet did not pass through it broke one rib going in an logged between the rib and the skin on the othe side. The hornady .44 xtp hardly looked damaged nothing like the mushroom I get out of my .44 Mag.

I called Tradions and they recommeded I using 60 grain of triple seven fffg loose powder.

I'm going to do a penitration test before next season.

Any other suggestion out there?

I've got the Vortek Pistol as well......I duplicated my pet load of 65gr 2f777, a standard Remington 209 primer and a 250 grain Harvester SaberTooth from my .50 cal Traditions BuckHunter Pro Pistol.......milk jugs at 60 yards are no problem with the Vortek with this load. It also shoots the 250 gr Traditions SmackDown with the same powder load just as well.....the 270 gr Sabertooth works well too and groups about the same for both of my pistols.....the Sabertooth is inexpensive compared to other belted style bullets. The Smackdown and SaberTooth load very easy.
Have taken several hogs and deer with this load out of the BuckHunter Pro pistol out to 50 yards with very good results...all less than 30 yard recoveries, and a couple were boomflops.
I missed a fat spike buck this firearms season with the Vortek at 25 yards....not the pistols fault, but mine...alllllllll mine. I had replaced the stock front sight with a fiber optic unit and paid absolutely no attention to the fact that it was about an 1/8th inch taller than the stock one....my bad....I didn't re-sight and hunted it.....duh.....had no other shot opportunities with it during the season.
The Vortek is an breeze to clean and breech plug comes out after 2 shots or 20 shots with no muss or fuss.
I have shot my Vortek at max 70 gr powder charges and found it uncomfortable...the grip is slick in the hand. I busted out my woodburner and deep burned a deer skull and antlers on the back of the grip....this helped the slick factor, but the 65 gr charge is all I need.
I have gotten some of the 777 Primers but have yet to try them....it's 12 degrees here...........LOL....will wait til it warms a bit.

Pellets verse Loose

Wow what a difference.
I did a primitive penetration test between loose triple seven and a magnum triple seven pellet.
The 60 grains of triple seven 3F777 loose was about 30 % greater penetration into some old books and news paper from about 10 yards.
I could feel and hear the difference, a definite crack with the loose powder.
I shot my Ruger .44 magnum as a comparison and it was about an inch further into the bundle.
The only difference was the powder the bullets where Hornaday .430 JHP sabots and the same for the .44 Mag.

owlswing

What kind of groupings did you get with your load ?: I also have the same pistol it is awesome.. I am shooting 60 gr of FFF with a 250 gr super shock tip bullet I get abt 2-3 inch groups at 50 yds with open sights looking fwd to getting a scope...may shrink the groups
