I was taught (and still follow) the 3 to 5 second rule. Always leave 3 to 5 seconds space between you and the vehicle ahead of you. Let them slam on their brakes...I have more than enough space.
Re: other scams and set-ups, call me paranoid, but when I am in the city, I am ultra-vigilant, especially at red lights. I leave a good car length distance between my vehicle and the one in front, and I scan continually. Better safe than sorry, right?
