I have not tried Trail Boss in 45-70 since I have been usiong my old standy load of 11.6 gr. Unique with the 405 gr. lead bullet for our local big bore matches at 50 yards.
I have tried Trail Boss in 44 Special, 45 colt and 38 Special. Enjoyed the mild recoil and minimal amount of smoke. I may try a few 45-70 loads just for the fun of it.

well went with 14.0 grs trailboss and my cast 350 lfn for the ruger #1 plinking loads to try this stuff out.strange looking powder kind of like cheerios:) .

I just tried this about a month ago. I purchased a #1 and the first load fired through it was a 325GC I cast over 16 grains of Trail Boss. I didn't shoot for accuracy, just to see if I could hit a 2 liter bottle of water at 150 yards. Windage was on but it is a 45/70, I had to compensate on the elevation. I was cut short on the shooting session. I have an IMR manual that lists Cowboy Acton data for 2 loads.

300 cast LFP start=14 of TB for 1199fps 14,400 cup
max= 16.5 of TB for 1285fps 20,900 cup

405 cast LFP start=12 of TB for 971fps 24,500 cup
max=13 of TB for 1007fps 25,600 cup

I've been using it under 300 and 350 grain RNFP's and will load up a batch of 405 Gr HBRNFP that I'm casting myself when I get 100 rounds of empty brass accumulated again. I really like it. Cleans up easily, not much smoke, and you can shoot'em all day. (Marlin 1895 CB)

man i love that stuff. trail boss is some of the best cowboy action powder around. cheer for the cherrios

14.0 grains of trail boss under a lee 340 plain base FP @ 50 yds.

That load chronographed at 1180 fps av., with a 5 shot extreme spread of 18.0 FPS! That low ES is the reason I think trail boss is so accurate.
