Is anyone using this for plinking ammo? Shot some today that really seemed dirty.

45Colt, WLP primers, Zcast 200g LRNFP, 6.0g Trailboss. (IMR shows 5.5 starting, 6.5 max).

Just wondering if with this powder, a light load would cause the dirty issues.

Yeah it SMOKES !
I'm using 6 grs TB, under a beeswax ,petroleum jelly, canola oil lubed 260gr .452" sized wheel weight, cast RCBS Keith style plain base SWC,it clocks 750-800 fps outta my 4 5/8th" Ruger Bishawk.

Sure wouldn't wanna be on the business end !

Yeah it will smoke and be dirty but the loads always are accurate and no slouch in the velocity department at max loads either. It was designed to smoke as the CAS shooters use it instead of black powder and it does not require the cleanup of BP loads in their firearms. I find that it is a bit cleaner burning and hits point of aim with 250 grain RNFP lead bullets at the max in my Ruger Vaqueros. Just be sure not to compress the TB any as it will spike the pressure fast.

I am running the same as dagger dog and find TB pretty clean however my other load for 45 Colt is black powder which really gives a whole new meaning to dirty. Oh and I use the lube the bullets I buy come with which is usually meant for smokeless which TB is.

Same here...I use it in my Vaqueros and Uberti's too. I think Trailboss is a consistant accurate shooting powder. Been my experience it burns fairly clean for a long shooting session. I like the accuracy so much I use it with 250 gr. RNFP for a carry round for the woods sometimes.

We shot some at 5.8 and some at 6.0. The 6.0 wasn't quite as dirty as the 5.8, but both shot well and seemed very accurate. But, downside is, I've been tumbling the brass for 3 hours with Berrys polish with corn cob, and it still pretty dirty.

Maybe need to change it to walnut ????

Walnut definitely cleans more aggressively than corncob. I do use corncob too, though because it polishes so much better than walnut. Nice purty brass is good for an extra four or five fps, I've been told. ;)

I've obtained some pretty respectable accuracy loading 5.5 grains of TB under a commercial cast 250-grain bullet for my New Frontier, but velocity is very sedate at about 700 fps. It's a real hoot to shoot, though.

Now I just have to say something because I have just noticed that my post count is "1." Check out my join date! I knew I had signed up several years ago but I did not realize I had posted nothing. I guess it just took me a while to get a "round-to-it!"

Like said above, Trail boss was designed to be smokey because of Cowboy Action. If you want cleaner 45 Colt loads use W231/HP-38 or Universal.

I use a 50/50 mix of Corncob and crushed Walnut shells in my tumbler. It seems to give be the best of both but that might be me seeing what I want to see. (can't hurt)

You should be able to bump that load up to 100% load density. I use 7.0 Trail Boss in .45 Colt with a 200 LSWC and there is still a little room for more. Shoots clean in my single shot carbine.
