Traveling to New York and this is ridiculous!

I've lived in NJ, right next to NYC, my entire life. Seriously, the crime is not as bad as people are going to make you think. In fact as of the past eight years, in terms of "violent crimes" it's on par with Chicago. That doesn't mean you mean you should feel like nothing can happen, but don't let the idea of NY scare you either. As for the laws, the state of NY does issue carry permits, although depending on what county you're in the county judge can be anti or pro carry and judge as such. Yes that is ridiculous. What's even more ridiculous because New York City is a class 1 city it will not honor or allow your NY State carry permit to exercised within the city limits. Again ridiculous. As far as blades go don't go buying into the 4" nonsense, it's untrue, in fact it's even worse. No gravity blades, no fixed blades, no switch blades, no butterfly knives, no stilletos, no black-jacks, no brass knuckles, and no carrying your blade open. I'm sure there's more to it than that but you get the idea. I carry my Spyderco Native and that's perfectly legal, as far as mace goes in NJ you can't carry more than, if I remember this right, 1/4 of an ounce, in NY and NYC you can carry however much you want but you're limited to what you are allowed to carry. However OC spray is legal (if you want to carry bear mace it's fine) and that will stop a person quick, fast and in a hurry. . . . . trust me on this one ;-). If you want talk to Maelstrom, he studied law in NYC and he can be a lot more help than myself. For what it's worth don't concentrate on what you can and can't carry when in the city, just focus on you and your family having a good time at a museum, an music venue, the Statue of Liberty, the Brookly Bridge, etc.

guys come on.. after NYC spent all that money to setup its law enforcement capability, it has to reap a return on equity quickly. Arming civilians is going to take away from that, as by taking out criminals you would be raining on their parade..it's better if we are victims, then the NYPD can go hunting bad guys.. the more bad guys the better as it is work for the boys in blue...

Look into a Zebra F-701 ballpoint pen, too. Refills are a pain, but the tip and barrel are both solid metal turnings... which means if you have to Go To Work with it, it makes a decent improvised-Kubaton.

And most important of all, it writes, too! Getting refills might take some doin' or a trip to MallWart though...

Take a Chance.

I had never been to NYC until about 7 years ago. Within a period of a year, I made about 12 trips.

The first time I rode the subway, I just knew someone was going to try to rob and kill me.

Relax. There are places in Texas (quite a few actually) where you're in more danger.

You've got to excercise a little common sense, but hey, you're from the South, right? We got plenty of that.

Do the tourist thing. Go see the Statue of Liberty, walk down Wall Street, see Times Square. I don't think you'll be sorry. And go to the memorial at Ground Zero. When I was there is was still just a crater. People just stand there quietly....like they should.

You still may not like it. Heck there's no WAY I'd leave Texas to live there, but do go and see it. Just to say you've been.

What others have said, if you are in the major tourist areas it's a pretty safe place, I travel all over the counrty and also go to NYC a lot. I feel safer there than a lot of other places in the county. Sure there are places you do not want to be but I doubt you will end up there.
You are right on the NY weapon laws , they are strict.

I don't remember who said walking stick, but that's nuts. Carry an umbrella. I have a fighting umbrella that my sister bought in London that is positively perfect for NY, especially in the fall/spring when it rains often, but it doesn't matter. Nobody ever blinks at an umbrella, and you could play quite a tune on someone with it.

when in NYC
Crocodile Dundee had his knife......:scrutiny:
Duncan McCloud had his sword........;)

what will Thor think??:fire:

i have lived/worked & visited NYC since the early 60's with zero problems--
don't play 3 card Monte and stay in the places that are where you belong
and you too shall have no trouble.

walking stick as suggested is never out of place.
situational awareness is a given--is a must any where and all the time.
know your route--do not walk about with a map in your hands--
if you have not acquired street smarts yet: buy or rent some for the trip:confused:

have fun, the odds favor you

Sounds like you'll be in NYC. And if you're a tourist, chances are you ain't leavin Manhattan. You'll be fine, just bring some common sense.

I've lived in NJ most of my life and worked as a LEO (Federal) in NY and the NY area. The advice I quoted above is true. Don't go sightseeing in the South Bronx at night, don't do dinner at the White Castle on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn, and don't go to Hunt's Point in the Bronx to see if its really like the HBO series and you'll most likely be fine.

NYC was a real cesspool until Guilliani became mayor. Every mayor of NYC was going to "clean up" Times Square but Guilliani was the one who succeeded (most of it is owned by Disney now). It's been pretty much kept the way Guilliani left it in 2001.

There are a lot more crimes by number but there are a lot more people. The violent crime rate is lower than Colombia or Charleston and is only about 25% of what Myrtle Beach's is.

Plenty of America to see out where they won't violate your rights.

If NYC wants my travel dollar, they'll repeal all their useless gun laws. Until then I'll travel elsewhere.

I've never flown either and you have my sincere condolances for your upcomming trip. Why don't you try and talk your wife into a nice cruise. It's probably cheaper.

Gosh, just stay home and set on yore front porch.

If you never leave, you'll always be safe.

I'm a Southerner, born in Georgia and raised in Texas. I love the South, but I'll be doggoned if I'll just stay home and never visit any other places because they're different.

And by the way, this feller is right. Flyin' ain't much fun these days, but if you DO want to travel to distant places, it's the only PRACTICAL way to do it. Cruising is fine, but you mainly just see the other folks on the ship.

And by the way, The folks I worked with in NYC were about as big rednecks as anybody I ever met down south. They all hunted and butchered their own deer. They were Yankees, yes. But not too bad either.

Caveat - I am not a lawyer and this ain't legal advice.

You may want to double check the info you have on "a knife cannot have a point"... NYC does have a law that prohibits blades that are more than 4", however.

My wife and I just came back from a trip to San Francisco and we walked through a lot of areas ~10+ miles per day. I had a spring assisted folder with a blade less than 3", a holstered mini-maglite, & a Kimber Guardian (not spray - it is driven by a small explosive charge and shoots a glob at 90mph). The Kimber alone would have done a good deal of damage. My wife had one as well. All of the above were perfectly legal, and I would have had no qualms in using any of it.

The best advice I got from my post on "Places to avoid in SF" was "Don't go to stupid places with stupid people and do stupid things." - or something to that effect ...

**Not all of my information comes from direct government law sources. This is just what I have been able to find from internet sources. As always please correct me if I'm wrong.**

The wife has talked me into traveling to New York for a vacation (if you can call it that). Now I being the simple person that I am, have never done much traveling out of the south and have never been on an airplane. <SNIP>

carry a tire tool. Like the one thats curved slightly and has a standard screw driver end. That'd really mess up somones day. I'd tell your wife to go somewhere else. try like Maine.
