I wish I had posted this last week when it was fresh in my mind but I've been very busy with school and was out of town for a bit. Here goes:

Last Saturday I decided we (myself and two friends, one male one female) needed to go to the range. Unfortunately the local range is still closed due to vandalism. So I found another public range...a little further away. On the other side of Richmond actually. :D It was about a two hour drive each way. What can I say, I really wanted to go shoot my new rifles (CZ 452 and a used Marlin 336 from the local shop). My friend brought along his shorty Bushmaster (I believe it's 16.5" with the muzzle brake).

Wow, it has been way too long. My skills have gotten really bad (not that I had much to begin with). I was shooting in the neighborhood of 4-5 inch groups at only 50 yards with the CZ. :(

The .22 is such a fun gun. It has very nearly no recoil at all. The .30-30 is also a fun gun, but it has quite a bit of recoil. Definitely smacked my eye protection with the scope after the first shot. I did knock out a ~2" (IIRC, not digging through the targets right now) group of 4 at 50 yards with the .30-30 though, which was good for me. Speaking of scopes - oh baby! I love that thing! I am having trouble seeing myself shoot anything with iron sights again past about 100 yards. I know, I know, I should learn to use iron sights first...it just seems less fun to me. ;)

I had forgotten how low-recoiling and fast recovering the AR platform is. I really enjoy shooting Matt's Bushmaster - I may opt for an AR over the AK or FAL I had been considering, even if they are dirty rifles. :D Between the three of us I would guess we shot off 120 rounds of .22, 175 rounds of .223, and 30 rounds of 30-30 over a period of 2 to 2.5 hours.

So - I need to NOT drink a huge cup of coffee before shooting. I was jittery as hell, which is what I'm blaming my terrible groups on. Yeah...coffee...that's it. ;) Also, they need to reopen the Chickahominy range because we got lost 3 or 4 times traveling to and from the Amelia WMA, and it took half a tank of gas.

I love the way my hands smell after cleaning guns. Mmmm, cordite and Hoppe's #9.

Sounds like a great time!

Agree on the smell of Hoppe'sÑDon't understand why women want pricey stuff like ChanelÑThey could just dab a little Hoppe's behind their earlobes and every male shooter they walk past would be following along, salivating.
