Just had to share this great turn of events with you folks. My Grandfather owns about 650 acres in central Texas, Brady/San Angelo area. I have hunted this piece of land my whole life, and while it does not produce the huge racks one might see in South Texas, we have taken some nice bucks off the place over the years.
My Grandfather is now 82, and he no longer takes hunting seriously. He still comes out and walks the place with us, but I think he enjoys the meals cooked over the campfire and an adult beverage or two in the evenings more than anything. Neither Dad nor I can remember the last time he actually killed a deer.
This past summer, I was visiting my Granparents with my then pregnant wife. I went with Grandad to a Kiwanis meeting where the presentation was by a representative for the Boys and Girls club. My wife and I like this organization, and have supported it over the years. So it was only natural when I bought 2 $25 dollar tickets for a trophy hunt they were raffling off...only I bought them in my Grandfather's name.
When Grandad called me at work last week, I feared the worst (He has NEVER called me at work before). Instead, he was bubbling over with excitement. He won the hunt, got his picture in the paper, whole deal. Guess who he invited as his guest?
The hunt is on a private ranch outside of Llano, Texas and includes a trophy whitetail buck, a doe, a hog, and a gobbler. Grandad would never spend the $$ to buy a hunt like this for himself...heck he doesn't even hunt his own place anymore. I am so excited to go on this hunt with him this weekend. I think it has been over 15 years since he actually killed a deer. Follow-up report and pics to follow!

There are no deer in the Brady/SA area?

There are in fact deer there, I hear. This is a nice deer I took off my Grandad's place one month ago. Heaviest deer to come off the ranch since 1977, and the biggest dang 6 point I have ever seen!

Tang,

I was poking fun ......and trying to keep the place a secret.

I got a nice one there last month and saw some excellent ones like yours others had taken.

Very nice critter. Wonder what he weighed?

I know you were poking fun! :)

Just couldn't pass up an opportunity to show off a little bit. He weighed 130 lbs field dressed. He had a nice layer of fat on him, and the processor said to add 40 lbs to get the on the hoof weight. The spike my stepbrother killed later in the weekend field dressed at 85 lbs, so this deer is really large for the area.
In fact, I was guiding this younger hunter when I killed this buck. I didn't even have my trusty .270 with me. I brought along (surprise) an older tang safety Ruger M77RL... a compact model in .243 for the youngster to use on a doe or spike. When this ol' boy showed up, I had to commandeer the rifle and make a decision in about 30 seconds. That little gun is like a magic wand...put in the crease behind the shoulder at a little over 100 yards, exactly where I was holding.
My Grandfather has gotten together with some of the other smallish landowners in the area and formed a wildlife co-op. They do a population survey every year and set reccomended doe harvest rates, etc. The rule on bucks is 8 pts or better and outside the ears (open season on all spikes). My Dad didn't jump my butt on this one because he was obviously a mature deer; if he doesn't have more points by now, he probably never will. He had the width requirement made by a large margin. BTW, the pop. survey this year reccomended that we harvest 16 does off our 656 acres! Too many deer!

Well he was a good size TX deer then.

Too many deer.

That place is amazing isn't it. It's crawly with'em.
And the axis deer roam free in herds there too. I hear the axis is actually better eating and hope to find out one of these days.

People will think I'm drunk when I say this but I saw more deer there per given area than I have ever seen rabbits anywhere.
I already can't wait to go back next year.

Hunt Report

I returned last night from my hunt with Grandad. When we arrived at the ranch gate, Grandad informed me that he hadn't bothered to buy a hunting license, and that he just isn't all that interested in shooting a deer/hog/whatever this year. He informed me that I was going to be the hunter this weekend, and that he would get a lot more joy out of seeing me harvest a quality animal than doing it himself. He said, "I have been hunting for over 60 years, and I have already killed my share of deer".
He had the guide just drop him off in blinds with his binocs so he could see what came out. The ranch had a lot of exotics, and we saw Sitka deer, blackbuck antelope, and A LOT of Aoudad sheep. I videoed one ram that must be close to 30 inches, they tell me that's a real trophy.
I saw 2 young whitetail bucks that I passed up. Grandad of course had a huge 8-point almost get in his blind with him...he just laughed and said, "see, if I had had a rifle with me I never would have seen that deer!"
So I never pulled the trigger all weekend. Grandad took great pleasure in cooking all the meals and running the camp. We had some great conversations and he really loosened up out there in the woods. At 82, he gets around great, and even wriggled his way into the back seat of the old jeep several times. I hope I am that mobile when I get to his age.
So, no animals, but to be honest I couldn't care less. I got to experince some new country with a fine gentleman. What a great memory.

Congrats on the good time you had with Grandad. Sounds like all had a good time. Even if nobody shot, you'll have good memories of it.
