What is a Trophy Deer?

If you consider LARGE Racks trophys

Well this past weekend we drove around the area we hunt and counted deer. We counted well over 200 deer and saw some very nice bucks. In some ways this was a trophy time. I have never seen so many deer. Not only that but to see that many bucks was awesome! And a few of those were VERY big racked deer.

Hopefully I will have a trophy deer story this coming deer season.

A trophy dear is the attractive young blonde you have attached to your arm as you make an entrance.

As far as racks............

A trophy deer for me is one that has enough meat on it to make a pot of stew, hopefully with some meat in the freezer.

If I had an antlerless permit, I wouldn't care if it was a trophy or not. When I hunt deer, it is to put food on my table and, at the same time, enjoy the great outdoors.

A trophy deer is in the eye of the beholder. If you think it is worth mounting, then by all means, mount it. My first (and only) five-point buck head is in my office from nearly 30 years ago. You can tell, I don't shoot many deer.

For me it is any mature buck: 4 years old or older. I do hunt the horns, but am just as happy with a nice cull or a fat doe.

Took this one this year. 140" with an 11" inside spread. Included a game camera picture from last year.

How many of you would consider an 8 point with a seventeen inch spread a trophy worthy of a shoulder mount?

I would. Especially if he's a nice, symmetrical 8-point.

My 10-point scored 119, and he is looking at me right now.

A trophy deer is those you end up dragging a half mile or further through rose thickets. A trophy deer is one that drops in its tracks when you pull the trigger. A trophy deer is the one you shoot in the last half hour of season. A trophy deer is one that you are eating while camping in the summer. A trophy deer is one that you make into summer sausage and share with your coworkers.

+1

They are all "trophies" to me, just in a different way!

What would you do if you found a "TROPHY" rack on your lease after the season?

Last weekend I found what was left of a buck that I had seen at my stand a few times during the season. I passed on him because he was a young buck, 2 1/2 - 3 1/2 years old. He was a nine point with real heavy beams. He had a 15 inch inside spread. I have quite a few photos of him. Obviously someone shot him and did not find him so I found what was left after the yotes had gotten done with him. He grossed 127 so although he is not a Boone and Crockett he did have the makings of a nice buck in the future...perhaps a 150 class in a couple of year.

Would you leave him laying?

I don't consider myself a trophy hunter because the meat in my freezer means more to me. When the freezer is full, I guess I'd go after some good antlers. A trophy in my book is a deer/elk/etc. that is similar to or beats your previous best.

Nathanael_Greene,

That is a nice mount. What part of TX do you hunt in?

Thanks! He was taken at the T-enCino ranch just south of Brownwood.

Taxidermy was by Rowdy Tomlinson of Done Right Taxidermy in Fort Worth. He did an excellent job at a very competitive price and didn't keep me waiting forever; I took the deer in October 0f 2006 and had my mount in January of 2007, as I recall.

I have 3 Mulies that I call trophy deer. They are my grandfather's, my father's, and my first bucks. They are each 4 points or 10 pointers as they are called in the east. They have special meaning to me although none would make the book. I also have a 130+ Blacktail that is important due to the people that I was hunting with that day. A 10 point Whitetail that needed a new cape is my other trophy, the antlers had to wait for a year to get a cape due to a running head shot that destoyed his. Each have a special place on my wall and although I have killed much larger deer these are the ones that mean something to me.

Nathanael_Greene,

I hunt a little south of there...just outside of Mason.

I have a nine point at the taxidermy now. I was hoping for a mainframe ten this year but the first week of December I decided to take the next best buck. I am glad I did. The nine point is by far the best buck I have taken and I hunted quite a bit more after that and never saw anything better than the one I took.

Dr. Tad Hussein Winslow,

I agree...this next year it will be a little tougher to do...I let two real nice nine pointers walk because they were a little young only to have both of them shot by the guy hunting next to me. One he shot and never found...I found it last weekend a little over 200 yards from his stand and then the nine point he shot the weekend after not finding the nine point he wounded.

Oh well...on the lease I am hunting that is the way it goes. I now ahve a better appreciation for hunting in Africa where if you wound an animal it counts against your tag.

Also, my first "trophy" antler set is mounted on a plaque, even though it's a tiny little 6 point. But it was my 2nd deer ever recovered, 1st buck ever killed, and most importantly, my 1st deer with a bow ever.

Well I took a photo of some of my "trophys" last weekend and thought I would share the photo as well as the reason why they are trophys to me...
The top right is a 7 point I shot while standing at my father-in-laws stand on property he owned. This buck was a real old one on the downhill side. He had just walked right by my brother-in-law who never saw him. As he was approaching the property line I asked my father-in-law if he was going to shoot him and he told me no and said if I wanted him to take him. Well I made about a 70 yard shot offhand. We got down to where I shot the buck and I started getting a lot of crap from my father-in-law who thought I had missed...but then about 20 yards away my brother-in-law found the first sign of blood and then we found the buck 20 yards further in a thicket.

The top and middle right plaques are bucks taken on my best friends lease.

The middle left is the first decent buck I ever took. I did a lot of scouting on public land and he is the result. When I shot him he literally ran right at my stand and fell dead at the bottom rung.

The most charished is the little 7 point at the bottom right. I shot that buck over 13 years ago and my father-in-law and I carried it out of the woods over a mile in pelting rain and trudging through mud. He never lets me forget it...He reminds me often that he had to put up with the view of 2 a$$es that day...the bucks and me...I also never let him forget that he was on the A$$ end carrying it over a mile. I do have a great father-in-law!

My trophies have been:

First deer I shot with a rifle - doe
First buck I shot with a rifle - 6 pt.
First deer I shot with a bow - doe
First buck I shot with a bow - spike
First deer I shot with a muzzleloader - doe
Biggest racked buck I have shot - 9 pt.

Anymore I hunt for the enjoyment of getting out, getting a little meat, and also helping out the local food bank. This year my "trophies" were 2 does. I wouldn't be disappointed if I never shot another legal buck.

My trophy....

Getting someone newer to the sport excited with every cold, windy, snowy, rainy,.......trip up through some fields. I know I've posted this pic several times, but look at that smile!
