Bought a Rock Island Armory 1911 5" government model .
I definitely like it, its accurate but it isn't reliable right now.
That's the troublesome part.

With the novak magazine it came with, it would jam on the last round.
The bullet would stay stuck in the gun (unfired, so I think it was jammed)
At times I would find a double feed. Most of the time it was just the last round just loose in the feed ramp area.

I tried some other mags recently but realized that these mags were also 8 rounders and cheap magar mags.

Bought a wilson combat mag for my government model.

It feeds from the magazine perfectly. New problem, The slide stop starts coming loose out of the side. I first noticed this when I got a double feed and looked over the gun. I saw that the slide stop was sticking out :) about the size of that smiley I just put in. So after it comes loose and I keep firing rounds and if I'm not paying attention then a round or 2 will jam.

I also checked to see if it happened slowly, but no, I fired from the magazine 1 round and the slide stop popped out. I then got the slide back into position so I could properly insert it. So it seems from consecutive shooting that with the loose slide stop I would eventually get a jam/failure to feed the round into the chamber.

I've read some links and did some searches and it seems some mention filing away at the slide stop area near the mag to keep the bullets from hitting it all the way to buying a wilson 'bulletproof' slide stop, but could there be another reason?

The best answer I could find stated this:

PROBLEM #1: THE SLIDE STOP:

A portion of the slide stop projects into the mag well for the purpose of engaging the magazine's follower and locking open the action when the gun is empty. Unfortunately, this also puts the slide stop almost in the path of a cartridge coming out of the magazine. Since the slide stop is only lightly spring-loaded into the down position, if a round of ammo nudges this part during the feeding cycle, it can pop up into the slide stop notch, locking the slide back with rounds still in the gun. This can get you killed. This malfunction usually occurs, if it occurs at all, when firing the gun with hardball and less commonly with shorter hollow-point rounds. If this hasn't happened to your gun, you probably have nothing to worry about; it's only a problem on certain guns. If you do have this problem, a good pistolsmith can dimple the slide stop where it touches the spring-loaded plunger. If the work is done to perfection, the slide stop will never pop up on you, but will still operate perfectly to lock open the empty gun.

Does it lock back in my wilson mag?
yes, it also lodges the magazine in there on occasion, I ended up having to pull the magazine out which would release the slide or not, in which case I would have to fiddle with the slide to get it to its correct position.

My novak magazine doesn't have this issue, it feeds properly except for the last round which doesn't feed properly and the magar magazine jams on every round (the round sort of goes into the barrel but seems to be hitting too high (the slide doesn't fully close). Previously when my gun was jamming the bullets were sort of going in but the slide would not fully seat or close, I could usually 'bump it close' with my hand (light tap), not happening this time with the cheap megar/magar.

I've never tinkered with "gun smithing" before but I'll outsource that since I don't want to do a hack job.

My only other idea is to send it back to the factory or buy another decent 7 round magazine and try that. My gun came with the 8 round novak. My dad has an old llama .45 1911 clone that feeds anything, crappy mag or super expensive mag but it looks like ****. But I would give him my gun! /he's smart enough not to take it :(

I tried his magar/megar 8 round magazine, my novak 8 round stock magazine and my new wilson combat elite magazine in 7 rounds.

Sorry, looking for a recommendation, not sure what rock island armory does in this case but bought this gun probably the last week of November.

mercdeking,

My advice would be not to waste anymore ammo or buy new mags. Contact Armscor today by Email. If you go to http://forum.m1911.org/index.php? you will find contact for Ray and Ivan in the Armscor section.

The customer service is top notch. Turn around is usually pretty quick.

Very unusual. I have the same exact gun and a multitude of other 1911s. The first thing I do when I purchase any 1911 is sell and/or trade the factory mags and use Wilson Combat. I have never had a single feeding or slide lock/slide stop issue with an RIA using Wilson Combat.

When I got to that part, I laughed so hard; spilled coffee on my keyboard...:)
I used to brag about my Llama .45 on the forums and all I got was: POS, "paperweight", no parts available, yada, yada, yada....:banghead:
Anyway, like suggested; I'd send it back for repair...The pistol is definitely one that got by QC and not behaving properly...Good luck...:)

**warning** off topic..

I love that Jefferson quote.. I'm stealing it.. but isn't he the one who said, and I'm forced to paraphrase, that "a candle looses no brilliance that lights another candle" ?

This message brought to you by the Articles of Confederation. We now return you to your regularly scheduled cup of coffee.

Is the spring loaded plunger (in the plunger tube, on the left side above the grip) still in place/operational? Does the slide stop have a divot in it for the plunger to engage?

Is the slide stop fully inserted into the frame when you start? The slide has to be withdrawn slightly, for it to fit through a notch in the slide. Has the inner shelf on the slide stop (which fits through the notch in the slide, and actually locks the slide back) been knocked off?

My slide stops have no divots in them. I assumed they would but they don't. Looking over the Kuhnhausen second book, pages 149/150 shows how to cut a detent. Since none of mine have a detent cut and work fine, and since a detent cut too deep will stop the slide stop from working at the end of the magazine, I would go very slowly on this. But I'm a hobbyist, not a gunsmith.

thanks for the replies...

If it functions and it shoots good, that's all that matters!
He found it tossed in a shoulder holster near a canal where he used to work at!

But so true on parts, he wanted a new grip for his gun after my brother sprayed some gun cleaner chemical that warped his rubber grip on one side. Can't find them.

I'll see about contacting RIA

In response to Deercop, there is a notch in the slide stop for the plunger thing to engage. And the plunger is working.

My latest gun, a Dan Wesson CBOB, has no divot in the slide stop, and when the slidestop is held open after the last round by the empty magazine I cannot put enough pressure on it to get it to release. Since I believe in sling shotting it after insertion of a fresh mag it's not a problem. The Kuhnhausen book says to dimple the slidestop in the down position, where the magazine spring would have to overcome it's influence. Tweeking tweeking. I say, if it ain't broke don't fix it, and I'm sure he would too.

Troublesome 1911

What 1911 isn't. I have owned maybe 12 of them over the last 15 years,
the only ones that were trustworthy were the Colts. Just my experience...:barf:

Well for one you are getting Failure to return to battery , Armscor recoil springs run on the light side get a new Wolf 16# spring and it should cure that .

I would also pop for a new Wilson slide stop , they are a tad oversized and you simply sand the stem that goes in the frame by rolling it around in some wet/dry . This is how I fitted mine when I wanted an extended stop for my Charles Daly EMS .

These two things that together cost less than $30 might fix all your problems without having to send your gun back and wait for RIA to get around to fixing it .

Big001,

I tend to try to fix things myself and send things to get fixed after I've exhausted all options.

I had actually thought when i was first getting the ftf that it might have been the magazine but it might also have been the recoil spring; so I got a wolff 16.5 variable spring along with the wilson combat mag since i heard good things about them.

I've been fiddling with the slide stop (no smithing) just pushing it while I slip it into the hole and the plunger tube activates (there is a divot in the slide stop); the slide stop just pops out a bit when I press the end part that comes out of the other side of the slide, so it doesn't fit really tight it seems.

Update:
Wilson magazine still causing errors; type of ammo doesn't matter. The slide catches on the plastic follower after slidestop gets popped out of its area; after the last round leaves the mag.

No other mag does this; with my new recoil spring something funny happened.
My novak magazine is now working like it should. So did it break in? Not sure.

No more failure to return to battery so far.

I bought an actual colt magazine to try as well

Going to take a trip to the boonies later on to try that and to fire off the novak a bit more. I shot off 2 clips before I had to leave the area :{

/kids kept riding their atv's and bikes near my 'hillside'; buggers must be deaf considering the fact that my gun is loud as hell. I drove like 2 miles into the hills away from them and somehow they still drove all the way were I was.
/safety :(
