Everyone has ahd some great ideas for securing longarms. Does anyone have any input for a dakota extended cab? I cant seem to find a spot in the cab that is somewhat out of sight and/or secure. Im considering a su16 or folding stock 870 in a duffle bag with the ammo with it, but Im a little leary of not beign able to lock the gun down.

Ive been wanting to do a truck for a while, I just cant find a spot that makes sense in my truck :(. I really wish the back seat raised forward like it does in a standard cab model, that would make life real easy.

Amoredman, please elaborate. What do you do to your mosin stripper clips?

The 6 I got from a friend need to be opened a little, then the ends crimped slightly shut, to work well in the M38. TAPCO cheapies are not the greatest repros, and the originals are hard to find. If you DID find an original copper, marked, stripper clip, mount it in a nylon holder on the stock of the M44...

My truck gun is a Mosin Nagant M44.

I filled the ammo pouch with 6 strippers of Barnaul 203-grain SP ammo.
I keep my hunting liscense in the side pocket of the gun case the rifle is in. Reason being, if asked, I can simply state that the rifle is for hunting (hunting with FMJ is a no-no here, which is why I carry the SP ammo). What if it's not hunting season you ask? Well, hogs, as well as some other medium game are considered pest animals and can be hunted years round. Hogs justify the .30 cal rifle.

Sp ammo might not go through all armor, but I doubt the guy would be thinking nice thoughts as his ribs shattered, either. I don't really consider it a defensive rifle, as has been stated, it's unlikely that I'd have to use it and not be able to use the vehicle to get away. If it's a situation like in the article, where I'd be trying to prevent a felony or some such, then the M44 would suffice just fine.

And what the heck, at $70, I can afford to have it confiscated after a shooting by the police more than even a cheap .30-30.

Magnum88C, do you have to remove the bayonet to hunt? I though we did in FL, but maybe I am wrong. I removed mine anyway to make it lighter, plus I added Darrells scout mount and a 1.5X pistol scope to it.

To my knowledge, yes, you do have to remove it. I think it says it right in the hunter's handbook that you can't hunt with bayonets. Don't know about where you live, but where I am, the ranges don't get far enough that the change in point of impact with the bayonet off matter. I'd use an M38, but they've gotten rare, and the ones I've seen and bought were well over $100, so it was just easier to take the bayo off the M44.

Not real worried about crime way out her but I have always carried a rifle in the car. I have a scouterized 38 Turk inside the backseat of my trusty steed (90 Festiva). The seat cover tore on one end and I discovered that the thing was actually hollow so in went the rifle. There is no way to tell it's there if you don't know exactly where to look. That a box of softpoint reloads and a bandolier of surplus and you're on the road. It is great for songdogs and roadwhacked but not dead elk and deer.

By the way this one meets all scout criteria except cal. and I prefer the 8mm to a 308 anyday.

I'm gonna have to second the M44 for the truck gun. I had my jeep broken in to and the Yugo SKS that was in it taken, and learned two things from it; 1, from now on, my car will be left unlocked - the broken window cost more than the SKS, and if someone wants to get in they will - better an open door than the window, and 2, it is insane to own a $50 rifle and not use it as a truck gun (M44).

In other threads regarding a recent incident about a body-armored BG with an AK against a CHL holder trying to take him down, the idea of a good truck gun is being discussed. I have been considering this idea for a while now and have not come to any great conclusions.
If you're concerned about body armor, just buy a CZ-52. A deputy friend of mine set his county-issued vest on a chair, and shot his vest with his CZ-52 using standard ammo (I think S&B). The bullet went through the vest "like butter", he said. Sounds like this is your truck gun.
