I'm shooting 185 xtp's, 7.2 grns CFE pistol in .45 acp Gold Cup. According to Hogden book that should be a pretty stout loud. I always thought the soot look was caused by an under powered load. Accuracy was great (atleast for me). 20230922_175438.jpg 20230922_193209.jpg

Pretty much what mdi said. I get somewhat sooty cases with my .45 Colt loads, which are 8.0-8.2gr Unique/250gr coated rnfp bullet with a Brinell hardness of 15. Dependable and accurate.
I don't think about it any longer. You're probably fine.

I get soot on my 45 cases with Hodgdon Universal too. The loads are accurate and reliable so I don't worry about it. I also use Universal for my 9mm, 9mm Largo/38 Super, and 40 S&W loads. I don't get much if any soot on those but I am also pushing the bullets at higher velocities when compared to 45 ACP.

I am going to stir up a hornets nest here. I know there is a lot of hate for the Lee FCD.

I find using the Lee FCD helps with my reloads to get complete burn with Hodgdon Universal. I also get less soot on my 45 cases and no soot on my other calibers when applying a light crimp with the FCD. I do make sure that my reloads are correct and pass the plunk test before and after using the FCD.

I'm using a Dillion square Deal press, so I have to use dillion dies with this press.

No hate here. A light taper crimp has never hurt any of my loads, been using the Lee FCD for years.
