Trying to fan the 1858

Well if you would only leave the revolvers in the box, oiled and stashed away they would never wear out and you wouldn't be at risk of crushing your pearls from all the clutching.
I was told that if you don't break a tool every now and then, your not using them...

I had a single action Rohm I bought new in 77. I fanned it a lot and got pretty good at it. The firing part not the hitting much of anything part. I could keep all six shots on a car door including the window from about 15 feet. Funny thing is I didn't know it could damage it and it didn't. Maybe if I'd known it would have fallen to pieces. My first wife still has it and still uses it 45 years later.

This is an old vid where I attempted to fan an 1858 like Clint Eastwood would. I found it while going through old hard drives.

I like it....nice first try. Bolts, springs, hands be damned....that's what parts stores are for. Besides, MidwayUSA, et al. need business and it's always a good time to buy more BP revolvers. Thanks for sharing!

@damoc pretty cool. Goon has said several times that his 'tuned and gooned' guns (you owe me a quarter if you use that, goon) :D

Thanks 1KPerDay! I like it . . . Lol!!

And for all y'all wondering . . . yes, you can set up a S.A. for fanning (I know you know that!) . A dedicated fanner will have different timing and there are "parts massaging" that keeps hands from getting pounded, bolts from breaking and locking notches from getting beaten to death. The caveat for knowing all that stuff is . . . it doesn't HAVE to be a fanner to still do all that stuff anyway (except for the timing part) !!! I do it to all mine and customers revolvers ( including other tricks!!) . . . just because . . . ya nevah know !! Lol!!

Lol!!! Hey 44 Dave!!! Well, YouTube didn't like them and some other videos he did ( they had "guns" in um !!! Yikes!!! ) so it's in video Heaven . . . along with the Dragoon he fanned!!!
Those were the days . . .

Thank you, Ephraim!

I had A Fanner 50 and rig!

One thing it taught me was Fanning made a lot more noise and allowed you to miss faster.

loved those little plastic slugs and spring loaded cases. Loading those grey plastic slugs in the cases and sticking a greenie stick’em cap on the base was sort of like hand loading.

only toy lever action I Had (other than actual BB guns) was the Wanted: Dead or Alive “Mare’s Leg”

I painted the grey bullets with my Mom’s red nail polish to make them easier to find after shooting.

I haven’t really practiced fanning, but with JR57’s action stop installed, I’ll eventually work up to it. Looks like the kind of thing to learn with careful slow practice, so it hits the right rhythm and doesn’t kill anyone.

I have read that some old time gun fighters had the trigger removed for quicker/easier fanning in a gun fight. Is their any truth in that?

I have heard of the trigger being tied back so that cocking the hammer and releasing it fired the revolver!
