My brothers and I want to take a vacation. A week of varmint hunting and camping was suggested and was quickly accepted. The problem is that we haven't the faintest idea where to go. We're located in Northern California and are willing to travel to Nevada, Utah, Idaho and possibly Montana but we need help finding a location.

Anyone that could chime in and point us in the right direction would be a tremendous help.

We're planning on driving and camping for the majority of the time. The timeline we were considering was a day or two to drive up there, 4-5 days in the field and a day or two for the return drive. Figure on a week and a half at the most.

I was thinking about southern Idaho because of the proximity to Mountain Home AFB and using my benefits as a military member for some inexpensive hotel digs. What I don't know about is the quality of hunting up there.

Our goals: test our shooting ability and have fun. Some long range shooting (200-600 yards is plenty) with some brotherly camaraderie out in the middle of nowhere is exactly what we're looking for. (I know this sounds like the making of a movie....)

Some questions that have popped up already:
What to hunt? Prairie dogs? Rock chuck? Ground Squirrel? What else is there?
Which state?
Time of year to go?
BLM land?
Licenses?
How much ammo?
Any special equipment required? Shooting benches? Optics? (We've got two rangefinders and tons of shooting bags.)

Thanks in advance.
