Man Threatens To Shoot Co-Workers; Guns Seized

Posted: Feb 14, 2008 09:08 PM CST

Austin, TX -- Police found an arsenal of weapons and ammunition in a North Austin home and arrested a former employee of Charles Schwab for making a terroristic threat.

Police were tipped off by a co-worker of Joseph Nipper, 37. According to an arrest warrant for Nipper, the co-worker told police Nipper told her he thought he could "kill 16 people before anyone could stop him."

Police said two co-workers of Nipper at Austin's Charles Schwab were the intended targets. Nipper allegedly told the co-worker he had a Beowulf gun and could use it to "take anyone out." According to the Alexander Arms website, which makes the Beowulf, the gun is the preferred close quarters combat weapon on battlegrounds in the Middle East.

"It is possible that, given the opportunity to carry out these threats with that many rounds of ammunition, he could have done some serious damage," Sgt. Richard Stresing of the Austin Police Department said.

After learning about the threats, Charles Schwab security discovered that Nipper had recently purchased several guns and more than 200 rounds of ammunition from the Web site GunBroker.com. The purchases were documented in Nipper's work e-mail.

He was fired from the company on Feb. 4, the same day police executed the search warrant on his home. In addition to the guns and ammunition, police also found books about how to make explosive devices.

"This was good work by the employees who knew about the threats and called this in, and by the police officers that investigated this and ultimately ended up with the arrest warrant and the search warrant," Stresing said.

The arrest warrant in the case said Nipper told police he remembered making comments about shooting co-workers, but he could not recall if they were real or from a dream. He was released from jail on bond and is prohibited from having any contact with Charles Schwab employees or coming within 200 feet of any company office. Armed security guards are on duty at Charles Schwab offices in Austin.

I don't think using your work email for purchases on Gunbroker is really a smart thing to do....

I stayed up late last night to see the "arsenal" that was touted in the commercial. The man is an idiot that deserved to get tossed in the can. I was disappointed with his "arsenal" however.

I'd be interested in the context of his "threats." I've never talked about shooting up my workplace, but, shortly after 9-11, when loads of restricted airspace was thrown up around the DC area, I was still living in Baltimore. I distinctly remember discussing how easy it would be to conduct a similar attack on DC even with the restrictions since, being a pilot in the area, I knew exactly how the security procedures worked. I wasn't threatening anyone, merely discussing how futile the "flight control" regulations were against knowledgeable terrorists.
I'm not saying this guy was very bright for saying something that could be considered threatening, and Schwab certainly had the right to fire him, but I wonder what the context of the comments was.
And what is the big deal about ANYTHING they found in his house? Guns? Ammunition? Books? we all have these things, and none of them are illegal.

His aresenal was like 7 guns. Glad they got him before we had to read about it in the paper that he succeeded in his plan. His mug shot showed a pretty disturbed looking individual...

Land o' Goshen! 7 guns? I can only imagine what the mainstream Media could make of my collection/battery as the Ordnungs Polizei dramatically threw them into a truck with all the hoplophobic twaddle that normally accompanies such a theatric event. I'm sure the guns I created or worked on as projects in Gunsmithing school would be portrayed as Evil Intermediate Sniper Rifles or (GASP) cop-killer (fill in the blank-I'm sure Sarah Brady thinks something I have looks scary). Ignore the fact that I got my first firearm at age 11 (1958) and have never harmed or threatened anyone with a gun in 49 years. Fat Boy Kennedy has killed more people with his registered car than I have with my guns. (Hmm- do you think he exchanges Christmas cards with the Kopechnes?) The Media are whores, and for them to portray themselves as paladins of the 1st Amendment makes me want to puke.

If we have "terrorists" walking around, we should be able to protect ourselves like our soldiers in Iraq. That means we should be able to defend ourselves with guns!

Regarding the arsenal, I'm sure almost everybody on this site who has seen the "arsenal" has had an introspective moment of how media would view their stash. I've been a gun owner for less than a year. I'll just say that when I saw the man’s alleged arsenal, I was wondering where the rest of it was.

6, 7...(couldn't remember for sure). Must have been 6.

But you are right...I did have an introspective moment the second I saw what they called an "arsenal" and they made a big deal out of the "200 rounds" that he had ordered from the internet.

Edit to add:

Looks like they had found 1500 rounds total. The kxan report just said "more than 200".
And it was 6 guns, I was definitely wrong.

LOL if he is such a marksman 200ft will do what? A decent deer hunting gun is effective at 800+ feet.
