TX Poll: Change CHL to Open Carry?

I'm with Arthur on this as asked.

I'd like to see Texas follow Alaska's example; unlicensed open or concealed carry but a CHL available to those that wish to have reciprocity priveledges with other states.

As the question is asked... I would have to vote "no". I don't support the CHL being changed to Open Carry. I would support Open Carry being added to it.

+1

Don't want to give up the reciproxity of CCW with other states, but would like the option to carry openly here as well.

Agreed. I want the option for concealed carry. I would probably rarely, if ever open carry.

I voted yes because I wanted to show support for open carry, but I agree with the above sentiments. I'd prefer to have both, and want the ability to carry concealed if I desire. I'd probably carry concealed most of the time anyway, but it would sure be nice to not have to be worried about brandishing if the wind blows up my shirt.

Would you support changing the state's concealed carry law to an open carry law?"

I don't have anything new to add. As a TX CHL holder I wouldn't give up reciprocity with other states. I'm all for open carry, but most certainly not in lieu of concealed.

It's at 70/30 now. I voted no.

Either they can require OC people to obtain a license, or drop the licensing requirements for CHL. If they choose the latter, I will LOL when there is no legal way to carry concealed in another state without obtaining an out of state permit. If OC passes(and I doubt it will), I hope they include a provision that prevents OC when a person has a valid CHL.

Just curious as to why?

So long as we have a CHL, shouldn't we have the choice to carry as we see fit--why would having a CHL negate your ability/right to carry openly when appropriate or advantageous to the CHL holder?

A little harsh. Why not allow the option of either with the CHL and open only without?

Agreed. You are still required to obey the laws of other states when in other states so it would not hurt reciprocity to have the ability to carry open if you are licensed.

That is precisely what they should do.

I used to live in Virginia, and Virginia had open carry, but not "shall issue" concealed carry. When the "shall issue" law was passed, carrying in establishments that served alcohol was prohibited -- which meant that you couldn't carry while taking the family to a restaurant. But that prohibition didn't apply to open carry. So most people with CHLs quickly learned -- take off your cover garment when you enter a restaurant.;)

Yes, open carry should definitely be a compliment to concealed carry. Texas could also use a few others changes with regards to firearms.

I just moved to Texas after living in Colorado and Pennsylvania. In both states, I never once worried about carrying because there really aren't any places off-limits (except the standard courthouses and schools), signs carry no legal weight, and printing isn't an issue because open carry is perfectly legal. However, here in Texas, I'm constantly looking out for 30.06 and 51% signs, and always conscience of printing. It actually takes a lot of effort to stay legal, which I don't think is very fair.

TX

If you can get unlicensed carry in some form, good for you. Otherwise, licensed open carry would good like we have in TN. I've always thought ironic, that TX, (thought of as a gun-friendly state) bans open carry.
