Unarmed Training

A well rounded MMA dojo will dabble in boxing, judo, Jiu-Jitsu, muay thai, and more Jiu-Jitsu.
While Jiu-Jitsu skills are great for the ring, not being effective until you hit the ground (outside a ring) will leave you hurt or dead.
Effective muay thai fighters have been involved in training for their entire lives...not something you are going to simply pick up.
Boxing is good, especially if you have good targeting and distancing.
A good boxer can stun an attacker and get away before he knows what's happened but he is also inside the attackers range to be effective.

All that said...and to somewhat counter myself...
If you are willing to dedicate yourself to serious daily MMA training with hardened fighters (not cheap) and actually take hard fights regularly you will learn what's effective and what's not, but it'll cost ya a few shiners

The street has significant differences (weapons, peoples friends, etc) from the ring but a guy with dozens of boxing matches, mma fights or the like has a marked advantage there. Fight training for sport will pay huge dividends in a street fight and much of the skills and mentality transfers. I fight very differently in a street fight than one in the ring but but I use my training for the latter to great effect. The thing about the street is that you dont want to voluntarily grapple IMO due to the possibilty of some one else kicking your head in, getting stabbed or the like. That said you may still find your self there and you need to know what to do. Being real good at some simple basics will go along ways. Royce Gracie used to say "the ground is an ocean, I'm a shark, and you dont even know how to swim."

p.s. Punched/kicked/grappled many people and it worked well for the situation. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you cant learn how to use MMA or any other MA for real world, you lack basic common sense knowledge on how to hurt/maim/kill someone IMO (going for the soft/squishy or weak parts). All that said weapons are still faster.
