Unless you live on a farm, you probably will need a permit if you want to dig deep enough to bury something. Worry about things like gas lines. I'm pretty sure your neighbors won't be sympathetic when half the street explodes in a gas line explosion and your excuse is, "muh guns."

On old saying (at least on the internet) is that, "If it's time to bury your guns, it's probably time to use them." Go with that route.

Thats not a bad point. Gas lines get closer to the surface over time, underground electrical too.

I would call before I dug.

In a serious earthquake, ground movement and upheaval and sinkholes can occur. Might not be as safe as you think.

Why would you bury something you didn't want to be associated with on your own property for one and anything I put into the ground for later use would be viewed as a spare with full understanding that it was as much in jeopardy in my possession as in the ground. Lots of stuff lost under the ground so unless conspicuously marked I don't think it would be s lost effort.
I'm presently involved with a project that is disturbing a plot of ground over 4 miles long 100' + wide and as deep as 70' and when you compare that the the undisturbed land adjacent it is but a small scratch.

Bury where people don't want to walk . If searching In a patch of thorn bushes . Under a manure pile if animals and live in country . Dam a stream and bury then release water . Always bury standing up. Less exposed to a detector. .
Also remember very few people ever look up when searching . Ground not always the best place.

Remember VC had places had to enter under water along a river bank and come up in a hide hole .

Single barrel shot guns are great hide guns . With slugs or buck shot. Let you enemy supply weapons .
Bang collect loot and pass gun on. . Of course this if country invaded or falls under Hillary control.

If I wanted to hide some guns or ammo I'd seal them in 6 inch PVC with caps glued on the ends, and several desiccant packs inside. Then drill holes about 6 feet deep, drop the pipe inside the hole, backfill, and drive steel fence posts into the ground right above the pipe. Just saying.

Before I buried anything I would look closely at replacing some dry wall and some paint at the back of a closet.
