Unique and metering

Middletown - What do you mean by pouring into the funnel instead of dumping?

I was talking about the main problem I had with metering flake powders was after the powder measure meters the powder I would dump all at once into the powder funnel directly into the case. Some of the powder would go into the case but then some would bridge in the funnel and not fall until I moved the funnel to the next round. If I didn't notice I would then get an under charge and then overcharge. My solution was to pour the powder into the funnel instead of dumping all at once and pay extra attention when loading flake powders. I haven't loaded Unique in a couple years and cannot recall for sure having that specific problem with it but I definitely had that problem with 800X.

Thanks Middletown, that makes sense, I also tap my press to account for any bridging that may occur there. I have had powder bridge in the funnel, and the double tap fixed it. I like you're gun in your avatar :).

Thanks, that is a Liberty model Security Six I picked up a couple years ago. It does see 38 Specials loaded with Unique. Great shooter!

"Unique and metering"....two words which don't often collide in the same sentence!
I used a LPD and was able to get +/- .2 in 9mm size charges 4-5gr and better with larger .357/.45 size charges.
I just loaded allowing for the + part of the swing.
If you like Uniques burn speed but want something that meters better Universal is really close. (but not as much velocity potential.)

The fix is to use WSF instead of Unique.

IMR has a new pistol powder out called "Unequal" that is supposed to be a direct replacement Unique. It is supposed to be a flake powder to fix the metering issue, but give nearly identical burn speeds.

Recob's and Graf have reserved a place for it, but show none in stock.

Count the posts which talk about alternative powders then note the good number of posts which speak positively about Unique. It's a reloading forum classic.

I have 3 PMs & none of them measure Unique well.
RCBS Uniflow
Dillon PM
Lee Pro Auto Disc.

I've had almost a full pound for probably 3 or 4 years.
Last time I used some I had to hand weigh all 50 rds.
I don't think I wanna do that again. :(
